Bethesda by the Marriott on Democracy Blvd

Joanie Feb 23, 2011 04:08 AM

Did a quick search for Bethesda but not knowing the area, can't tell if the good places are anywhere close to this hotel. Trying to find a Mon. nite dinner for someone who wants a good glass of wine and a new American menu, maybe good fish. Is the Woodmont Grill an option? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Wooodmont Grill is a fine solution. It's in a upper-crust strip mall, 2 traffic lights away. Kind of a "ladies that lunch" place. Okay wine list, nice salads, a pasta or two, and a couple light fish/chick dishes.

If you'd like to drive 15 mins into Bethesday proper, you have dozens of other options. Search this board or do an Opentable request.

Well, if you are talking about going to the Woodmont Grill, then you apparently have a car or are willing to take a taxi into Bethesda proper. Woodmont Grill is basically a Houston's (a chain restaurant). If you are going into Bethesda you can do much better. Across the street - Black's Kitchen. Pricier, too, but it meets your criteria and is generally acclaimed. I'm not coming up with much in the category of good fish, though. There is a McCormick and Schmick's but I have never been there so I can't comment. Other than what Black's might have. Other excellent choices - Grapeseed or Redwood.

Here is a Bethesda dining guide: http://www.bethesda.org/dining-guide

If you do have a car, you might also consider Addie's (on Rockville Pike, owned by the same people who own Black's).

Warning - the area where you are staying is a confusing tangle of roads. You are really going to want a GPS in your rental car. I live here and I always get mixed up back there!

I saw that downtown Bethesda looked more interesting but like I said, I can't tell what the layout is and no, he doesn't have a car. Oakville Grill & Wine Bar in some mall seemed decent and quite close. Or is it too mall-ish?

Joanie... my mistake. My comments above are about Oakville Grill (NOT Woodmont Grill). I got momentarily confused. My apologies.

And Oakville Grill is not only a ladies-that-lunch, but it is not ever better than mediocre.

Oakville Grill is also not really walkable. Distance might not be too bad, but that is not really a walkable area. Too much traffic. Except for the kids from the high school...but they are kids who don't really care about such things.

Without a car, you really can't do much from that location. The choices really are take a taxi, eat in the hotel, or maybe the hotel has a shuttle that runs into Bethesda?

Blacks in Bethesda or Addies on Rockville Pike near White Flint are both excellent choices. Also could go to Jaleo in Bethesda for tapas, Mykanos, a greek restaurant in Rockville that has good fish dishes, Sol de Espana a spanish restaurant in Rockville that has good fish dishes as well as Mi Rancho, a tex-mex restaurant that usually has who grilled red snapper. another choice is The Mussel Bar in Bethesda directly across from Jaleo. In Montgomery Mall off Democracy Blvd there is a Legal Seafood and that is probably the closest choice to your location, but all the other choices are not very far away

If you do go into Bethesda, be warned that Mussel Bar is getting rather mixed reviews. Noisy, not great value, and the beers are apparently very expensive. And even the food is getting mixed reviews.

McCormick and Schmicks is fine-- a chain seafood place like Legals but both do a pretty good job.

When I read your request, Grapeseed is what came to mind.

Is this the Marriott where you'll be staying? BETHESDA MARRIOTT SUITES 6711 Democracy Blvd

You'll need to know it is in the midst of high rise office buildings. It is not accessible to anything by walking. Even if you were to brave the fact there there are no sidewalks and you choose to walk, the only somewhat nearby place is Montgomery Mall where you'll find places like Legal Seafood, a perfectly serviceable choice for simply prepared fish or seafood. (Their swordfish with red onion jam is good.)You will need a car to get to "downtown" Bethesda.

Yes the 6700 Democ location. So if he goes downtown, it seems like Grapeseed, Redwood or Black's is where he should go? How long is the cab ride? I'll check on shuttle options.

According to the hotel website, they have a "Complimentary shuttle from our hotel ... to NIH, Westfields Montgomery Mall & Grosvenor-Strathmore Station [Metro]".

It's roughly a 4 mile cab ride to downtown Bethesda.

If you are going into downtown Bethesda, Persimmon is a good choice. Redwood gets mixed reviews. I also second Black's and Grapeseed.

My recent meals at Grapeseed have witnessed a faltering kitchen and an extremely uninterested staff. Not to mention there isn't one good table in the whole joint and it's louder than any place in town.

If they will take him to NIH or Grosvenor, then it is only 1 or 2 metro stops into Bethesda.

Redwood got dreadful reviews when it first opened but since they brought in a new chef, things seem to be going well. I have had two very good meals there. Nothing to rave about, but perfectly enjoyable. It is a very attractive place, service was good, and the menu was interesting.

I hope Pappy's experiences at Grapeseed are the exception. I haven't heard any negative reviews of Grapeseed recently. It seems to be a favorite of the donrockwell.com crowd, which is a pretty knowledgeable group of eaters. I haven't been there in over a year so I can't say. I always enjoyed my meals there.

Blacks has always been good, except that I did have one truly awful dish there, one time, several years ago. Concept, execution - all wrong. It was a PPYKAG kind of disaster.

Redwood is bettter, but still not good, or worth the money. Blacks is now much better, and is one of my go-to places. Especially for the garlicky seafood "stew." I actually like Assaggi too for charcuterie, pasta and whole grilled fish.

Regarding Rockwell.com, I learned long ago to not to believe anything written there. Poor judgement and alterior motives.

I'm sorry to hear you've had bad experiences with donrockwell.com. I've found it to be full of extremely knowledgeable eaters, chefs, mixologists. We rarely eat out and so when we do, we want to be sure we are choosing wisely. The reviews posted on dr.com are generally so detailed and so accurate that we know just what to expect. We have done quite well using donrockwell.com to find good meals. And no - I don't know anyone who participates...none of the posters, chefs, etc. Before you accuse me of personal bias or ulterior motive.

Yes, but if you take the shuttle to the Metro, and then take the train, you might as well take a cab for a couple bucks more.

I haven't gone to Grapeseed in the past 6 months, but have definitely had great meals there within the past year. And the Friday night HH wine/food tastings are a great deal and much fun.

I don't think anyone said Mia's Pizza yet, which is a nice spot. And, though I know the OP asked for Modern American, you can't talk about the best restaurants in Bethesda without mentioning Passage to India.
