Fresh Crab at Lonsdale Quay v.s. Alaska King Crab ?

I have a very special guest coming in next week. Before I moved to B.C. we have periodically enjoyed sharing feasts of crab and I would like to continue this tradition.

I am considering two options. I have heard there is a place in Londsdale Quay where you can buy fresh crabs and get them steamed to bring home. Has anyone tried this? Do you know approximately how much it costs?

The second option we are considering is: taking him for Alaska King Crab. May I ask where your favorite places to partake of this are? How much does it cost approximately?

Thanks in advance for considering my request for info!

You can also buy a live alaska king crab @T&T. Price around $20-25/lb. For an 8 lb crab that gets pricy fast, but damn it is good! When you steam it yourself you can be sure if wont get overcooked. Otherwise your best bet if you want to go out for king crab would be sun sui wah. Call to check price first, it won't cheap!

T&T has very reasonably priced dungeness, usually around $4.99 / lb. Much better to cook them yourself than get someone else to do it.

Getting it into pieces is the biggest thing. The fish shop will do this for you if you ask them, but if you are not going to eat it for more than a few hours and your not afraid of dealing with a struggling giant crab then you can leave it alive and do it yourself. It's not like dealing with a dungeness crab at all....more like killing the giant spider in Lord of the Rings. I ended up stabbing mine between the eyes to destroy the brain and kill it (kinda like a zombie) then pulling it apart. Unlike a dungeness there's almost nothing to eat in the body, the meat is all in the legs. Pull off the carapace, clean out the lungs and intestiny stuff, then section the legs. I didn't split the legs, although some restaurants do. I just steamed them whole (or sectioned) for about 5 mins. Sweet, crunchy and absolutely delicious. oh....and AKC is on sale now. $12.88 / lb @ T&T

WOW....you are brave!! I may have to defer the killing to T&T. The cooking I think I can handle....:-).

Thanks for your wonderful suggestions to my original query. We had an unexpected death in our family, so our visit did not go as planned and we did not have a crab dinner this time. However, now that I know how easy it is to DIY... I will make use of these tips for hubby and I. Many thanks!

I usually go to Superstore for fresh crab. Ask them to clean it for you, and all you have to do is throw it in a pot and steam it for about 10-15 minutes. No fuss, no muss. Their prices are usually as low as you'll find in Vancouver - last week I think it was around $7,99, but that was on Valentine's Day so the prices might be even cheaper now. A good size crab will probably run around $20.

T&T Supermarket also has great prices for crab, and they'll clean it for you as well.
