where are the good indian and thai places near old town, alexandria?!

We recently moved from NW DC to Alexandria, just south of old town, and are in search of good indian and thai restaurants. We've tried a few Thai places, including Mai Thai, Sam Phao, and Red Mei, and thought they were mediocre. Haven't tried indian in the area yet, but am looking for something good (like Rasika or Indique in DC). Any suggestions? Near Crystal City OK too, since it's on the drive home from work. Thank you!

Agreed that those places are mediocre. I like Thailand on Royal Street for Thai food in old town - it's not the best I've ever had, but I think it's the best of the options. We get Indian from Kohinoor Dhaba in Crystal City. I would never compare it to Rasika, but it is very cheap, and better than the others that I've tried in the old town area.

As a fellow resident of "postal Alexandria" who loves Indian and Thai food: unfortunately, on the Indian front, you're probably going to be disappointed, as there's nothing like Rasika or Indique in Alexandria. Your best bets in Alexandria or Crystal City are, on the cheap side, Kohinoor Dhaba or Kabob Palace (not Indian but close enough for most) in Crystal City, or on the slightly pricier side (but again not anything like Rasika) Bombay Curry Company in Del Ray. Dishes of India is OK, although the last 2 times I've gone I've been in a hurry and just had the lunch buffet, which is kind of mediocre.

For Thai in Alexandria, Sakulthai in Landmark or Pasara in Kingstowne and Old Town are all good; Thailand Royal St isn't bad, and Mai Thai has actually impressed me on occasion.

Avoid Thai Old Town on King Street, which is execrable; Galae Thai and Mai Thai are both OK (Mai Thai has occasionally impressed me) if overpriced, and I think Masaya on King St is still open, and it was also only OK the last time I went there.

Red Curry was just abysmal the one time I went. (I'm assuming you mean Red Curry rather than Red Mei, by the way. The latter is a perfectly fine fast food pan-Asian place, but not anywhere I'd go for "Thai food" as such, although they do have a Pad Thai on the menu that I've never tried.)

Oh, also: my one visit to Po Siam on Mt. Vernon Ave in Del Ray about a month ago was very promising.

Columbia Pike is a couple of miles from Crystal City and has, in order of preference, Thai Curry (on Glebe just off CP), Bangkok 54, Rincome, and Thai Square.

Just to be clear. You're not going to find anything comparable to Rasika in Alexandria or Arlington. You're just not.

That said, I really like Dishes of India in Belle View -- just south of Old Town off the GW Parkway. And for Thai, I second the rec for Bangkok 54 in Arlington. I haven't found any Thai in Alexandria that wasn't mediocre.

Second all these Thai recs, if you search this board, I think someone translated the Thai Square Thai menu (although they have some great stuff on the regular menu too).

Try Sakulthai--the chef there is from Thai Square, I believe, and it's more consistent than Thai Square of B54 these days in my experience.

We've been avoiding Dishes of India since the sauce/food ratio went out of whack. We get our Indian at Bombay Curry company.

I'm not fond of Thai food, but I enjoyed Thai Herbs near Hybla Valley. Nice interior, good prices, don't go overboard with the cilantro.

For Thai I would second Thai Square on Columbia Pike (Arlington) and Duangrats or Rabieng on Rt 7 (King St). Also may I suggest Duangrats Oriental Market which is next door to Rabieng. Better than any Thai in Virginia, but it is all takeout. I know these are not Alexandria, but these are the best in my opinion.
For Indian, Alexandria has some pretty pitiful selections. I still like mediocre Indian though, so that being said: Aroma in Shirlington, Bombay Curry company, and Ragga are decent. If you want good and more authentic indian go to Fairfax.

Strange, no one mentioned Po Siam on Mount Vernon Avenue. Been going there for years, very good.
Bombay Curry Company on the other hand does have some interesting stuff on their small menu and I do like the spice rubbed chicken wings grilled in ther Indian oven.
