ISO Great Bread Pudding?

Friends just came back from New Orleans and Mardi Gras is bearing down so my husband keeps sending me recipes for chocolate bread pudding a la New Orleans. Any Boston Cambridge restaurant recommendations for a worthy bread pudding, whiskey sauce optional but appreciated - I would rather go out than cook.

  1. The best bread pudding I've ever had was at Le Patissier Cafe at Troquet. Not cheap but very memorable for me.

    1. I just posted about this in my review of Ten Tables Cambridge -- amazing cherry pecan bread pudding with caramel sauce, light and buttery instead of being heavy and custardy like most bread puddings (which are also very tasty, but this one was so much better). I'm not sure if it's a regular dessert, so you might call if you're thinking about going there.

      1. The chocolate bread pudding at Henrietta's Table is second only to my grandmother's. very dense and chocolatey.

        1. I just had the toffee bread pudding at Citizen in the Fenway - just amazing...

          1. I really like the bread pudding at Grill 23 & Bar. Always get it for desert there with a glass of VinSanto. Also, the amaretto bread pudding at Siros/Marina Bay is delicious. These are to can't miss versions.

            1. Coppa had a really fantastic bread pudding when I stopped by for dinner a month or so ago, but I would call first to confirm that it's still on the menu.

              1. This is a little farther out, but I had a memorable bread pudding recently at the Legal Seafood in Framingham/Natick. It was pumpkin, and when I commented on how good it was to the waitress, she said that the chef has his own recipe, which he varies, and will not sell it to the restaurant.

                1. The Langham Hotel used to serve an amazing chocolate bread pudding at their Chocolate Bar Brunch on Saturdays. It was made with croissants and chocolate and served warm with whip cream and chocolate sauce....to die for! Call to make sure they still offer it first, but if it's there, trust me, go!

I have tried to avoid the spot for a few years as that brunch is dangerous for anyone with a hearty appetite and a refined sweet tooth!

                  1. Aquitaine makes a fabulous bread pudding, called Pain Perdu, crispy House Made Brioche with
Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Maple Syrup. I couldn't finish it, and brought the rest home.

                    1. Eastren Standard Kitchen in Kenmore Sq used to have a very good Bread Pudding with a caramel sauce.

Thanks for the tip- we had it last night. Terrific salt caramel ice cream and praline cookie but the pudding was a dud. The search goes on.

                      2. The bread pudding at Oleana is not only the best bread pudding I've ever had but also the best dessert I've ever had... ok maybe that is hyperbole but I pined for it after the first time I had it... it was off the menu for a while and then 5 years later I had it again and it was everything I built it up to be. Few foods can sustain that kind of long-term fantasizing.

High praise indeed. I'm headed there Monday night, and unless I'm completely seduced by another dessert, I'll give it a try.

I managed to snag a bite of my son's bread pudding. Just as good as you said it would be. The browned butter and milk jam really put it over the top.

I had the vegetarian tasting menu, so I got the dessert that came with it. Almond financier with candied tangerines, I think. It was okay, but couldn't touch the bread pudding (or the chocolate creme brulee that my husband got.)

I'm glad you liked it even if you only got a bite.
