Looking for a Lolita update.

Now that Lolita has been open for a while I am interested as to how they are doing. I heard the food was good, but the service not up to par yet. Any updates out there? I am bringing folks from out of town to dinner tomorrow and they want Mexican.

  1. I tried Lolita twice and have to say was very underwhelmed both times. I did not have a problem with the lack of authenticity; but rather a lack of execution. Some of the dishes I tried could have been good but suffered from either a lack of salt or were served tepid. The drinks were ok, a great and expansive tequila list but a less than educated staff. The place was busy which leads me to believe the owners are happy and won't address some serious food and service issues. I last ate there about a month ago and can honestly remember nothing of what I ate. My overall impression? This is a bad restaurant.

    1. That book by Nabakov?
      or....

      1. I've been in twice (the most recent outing being just last week) and have really enjoyed it both times. I think the cocktail list reads better than it tastes, so have decided to stick with their Lolita Craft Brew, which is solid. I was in on busy nights with a party of 6 both times and we had friendly and responsive servers. I can't say we were relying on them for a lot of knowledge. The food is clearly not attempting to be authentic Mexican, but it is pretty yummy. I liked the taste of a friend's ceviche that I had, and several of the tacos are downright impressive. The tacos sort of blow La Verdad away (not that that is hard). It gets loud, for sure, but I had a great time both trips and the total tab ended up being 40 per person with food and drinks each time. The interior is pretty fun, too.

        1. I ate there last Tuesday with a party of 7. In general the service was very friendly but there were some glitches. It took longer for drinks to get to our table than some of the food (upwards of 20 minutes on a quieter night). The shrimp tacos were bland (I'll take La Verdad's over these). They even do a corn on the cob like the one at Toro that is good. The fried oyster appetizer was also good. The guacamole with lobster and crab was bland. The lobster from hell had a nice garlic flavor but the hot sauce destroyed any and all flavors (it is possible to make something spicy and flavorful). I had a prickly pear aqua fresca which tasted like Hawaiian punch but with a metallic note. Many of the foods seemed greasy (even the guacamole had melted butter poured over it at the table by our server). I might go back but avoid the weekends when it is too crazy and over 2 hours for a table. On a side note, I live nearby and am glad to see that a Back Bay Restaurant Group venture did not take the spot.
