Casual Downtown Reccomendation

I have a friend coming in from Denver tomorrow staying downtown. Any suggestions on a casual place to eat for dinner?

      1. The two above, plus Neighborhood for burgers and local beer.

        1. Must get res at Noble Experiment for cocktails. The entrance is in the Neighborhood. Text the phone to get a res. Great flavorful drinks.

Yes! Start with cocktails at Noble Experiment, then dinner in Neighborhood. You should text for reservation NOW if you decide to go to Noble Experiment -- it books up quickly.

Is the NE really worth it? reservations for a bar? I am just curious if it is just a place to be seen? the exclusivity of it, or are the mixed drinks really that great?

The place is really tiny, only seating 30, which is why it is hard to get res. We were on the waiting list and just sat at the bar in Neighborhood waiting. There were about 6 seats at the bar and 3 -4 for lounge chairs.

I don't really like the harsh taste of hard liquor but I like a good flavor combinations. I told the waitress what flavors I like cucumber, ginger and lime and I got a really different bourbon drink. It is fun place to try out if you can get in.

Yes, it's worth it. It really blew my mind. NOT a place to be seen -- too small for that. Drinks are super-personalized -- you essentially have a dedicated (and extremely knowledgeable) drinkmaster at your beck and call for as long as you want. Got to try it at least once (though you'll come back for more).

OK, I was just a little fearful of a James Brennan/table service/Ed Hardy/mortgage broker type of place.

NE makes some of the better cocktails in town - if you've never been, I'd give them a try.

I think the San Diego striped shirted mortgage brokers got extinct somewhere around November 2008 to March 2009.

I guess I should update that to: skinny jeans/curly mustache/hipsters, though I must admit that I do have a mustache.

I think it's the ironic mustache that sets them apart from the rest of us...

They must have had the foresight to realize we'd be reliving the 1920s.

Are you talking Rollie Fingers curly stash??

                              1. re: cstr

So I took the rec and went to Noble Experiment for drinks and Neighborhood for dinners. Sorry Cowboy Star was a bit pricey. Noble is amazing. Single malt scotch mixed drinks? Who knew! The food was good. Great gormet burgers and the onion rings were fantastic. Thanks,

Good call. But I always feel weird packing my bootleg stash of ketchup ;-)

Glad you liked Neighborhood but, Single Malt Scotch yes .... mixed??? drinks???? argh!! the only mixing with a single malt would be a small splash of H2O to open it up.

                                    1. re: cstr

Agreed until last night. I am total Scotchie......trust me. You need to try this.

                                        1. re: Ewilensky

Not sure. I had two different ones. One was a regular looking drink the second looked like a martiini.

                                    1. re: Island

Isn't that same thing as ironic?
