Chowhound meeting in Istanbul? Plus restaurant recs

This is probably a long shot, but I am going to be in Istanbul for a week at a conference in late March and will have most evenings off. Might anyone based in Istanbul be interested in getting a dinner of Istanbul-based chowhounders going?

If there is no interest, I would still be extremely grateful for restaurant recommendations. Turkish / Middle Eastern preferred, but anything good is fine (whether very high end and expensive or just good honest (and cheap) grub, whether local or foreign cuisine doesn't matter - I am interested in anything.

I will also check out parlafood.com, which a poster on chowhound says contains Istanbul restaurant recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Asomaniac! Im the author of parlafood and would be happy to give some istanbul recommendations here. However, I would also strongly recommend you consulting the Istanbul Eats and Istanbul Food blogs for more suggestions.

Some places in Istanbul I really love are Fatih Karadeniz Pidecesi (Fatih), Kaymakçı Pando (Besiktas for breakfast), Tarihi Karakoy Balikcisi (Karakoy), Kantin (Nisantasi), Canim Cigerim (Beyoglu) and Iskele (Rumeli Hisari).

I also had a great dinner at Antebi in Goztepe (Anatolian side) last night and at Asmali Cavit (Beyoglu) tonight. I would highly recommend both places.

      Hi Katie,

That is briliant, thank you very much! I will read in detail about the restaurants you recommend. BTW, I will be staying at the Ceylan InterContinental Hotel, the address is Askerocagi Caddesi No. 1, Taksim. Are any of the above restaurants close to the hotel? Not that I won't explore the city as much as I humanely can, but I may want to keep it close to the hotel for one or two of my evenings there.

...or rather, "humanly" (though I am sure my exploration will also be quite humane).

Kantin (which is open until 8pm) is about a 20 minute stroll from Taksim, as are Canim Cigerim and Asmali Cavit. Karakoy Balikcisi (only go at lunch when the most talented grill master perhaps on the planet is there grilling) is by the Karakoy ferry port, so just another 10 min or so downhill from Canim Cigerim and Asmali Cavit. Enjoy!

Hi! I'd love to join a get together if one is made here in Istanbul. I'm a fairly new American expat living Istanbul and I write a food blog from here. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town March 23-27, but you are around later would love to get together with a group.

Also, I second the Istanbul Eats website and book. It's full of great and usually small restaurants.

        Cheers!
