Best restaurants in Penang

I will be flying to Penang shortly and have not been there in a long time. Could anyone help with the names of some good restaurants there, particularly seafood restaurants? Thanks in advance.

    Two huge suggestions:

    1) Hai Boey Seafood. This is on the south eastern side of the island, basically geographically opposite of Batu Ferringhi but absolutely worth the drive. It's no hidden secret at this point but it will be one of the best meals you'll ever have. Here's a good review w/ pics: http://mylovemyfood.blogspot.com/2012... (not by me

    )

    2) For those in the Batu Ferringhi area, I cannot highly recommend the Long Beach hawkers' market enough. It may not be as storied as most of the other markets on the island and it obviously caters to tourists (they have a pizza stand for example...and it's terrible) but the overall quality of food here was pretty solid and so much more affordable than overpriced hotel buffets. The stands likely change over time but I'd recommend:

BBQ chicken wing lady (on the "right" side), the grilled seafood stand (back/right corner), and while the satay isn't the best I've ever had, it's fine for what it is and at 10 sticks for 8 ringgit, you can't really complain. Beef > chicken at that stand, btw.

Tandori [sic?] stand (back right corner) is also good for its biryani. And my dad got some very good roti canai but I can't remember from which stand.

Keep in mind: Long Beach is only open for dinner and never get there before 6:30pm since most places aren't open. Also: I've seen other reviews that raved about the spring rolls (right side) but I thought they were completely unmemorable.

We went two nights in a row but only tried a fraction of what was there. Like I said, if you're at one of the hotels there, highly highly recommended, at least for one meal. Long Beach is on the beach side of the road, just east of D'Ferringhi Restaurant.

Thanks for this. We will be staying at Tanjung Bungah, which I believe is only 10 mins or so from Batu Ferringhi. My last visit was 30 years ago.

30 years is a loooong time! Penang's changed quite a bit since then. You can try Eden Seafood nearby:

Yes, it is a long time. I live in Lao now and only go back to Australia about once a year. Even in one year you can see changes in Australia - let alone a 30 year period. Thanks for the food tip.

            Hello Ron,

I'd second Eden Seafood. Here are some other options listed in the web: http://www.10best.com/destinations/ma...

I wonder if the seafood restaurant, End of the World, is still operating? I haven't been for quite a while. So, Ron, get your hotel concierge to call ahead & confirm/book first. That place is really one of the best we have in Penang.

Thanks penang-rojak. If you ever come to Lao I will return the favour.

Thanks, Ron. Laos is definitely one of the places I'd like to visit if I have time. So far, where Indochina's concerned, I'd been to Ho Chi Minh City where their street food's remarkably similar to Penang's street food, Hanoi and Hue in Vietnam, and Siem Reap/Angkor Wat in Cambodia, but I didn't quite take to Cambodian food as it's not as spicy or have strong flavours as Thai food, its nearest culinary cousin.

BTW, if you are interested in Penang street food, or hawker food as we call them, you can grab a copy of The Star Guide to Malaysian Street Food available in bookshops here.

I am interested in all food, so I will get a copy in KL or Penang.
                  Thanks

Ocean Green on Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah comes to mind. Whereabouts on Penang are you staying, coz if you are in the Batu Ferringhi beach stretch (quite a distance from Georgetown), there are other seafood restaurant options there.
