VEGAN/VEG RESTAURANTS
Hello,
We are celebrating a bachelorette in NYC in July and the bride-to-be is vegan so we decided that all our evening restaurant choices should be vegan/vegetarian. I know of Candle 79 in the UES, but I'm wondering if there are any others. We are trying to look for fun places. Please let me know if you know of anything! We want to stay in Manhattan, and the budget isn't really an issue. If you know of a great Indian restaurant (that isn't a hole in wall type place, but more like a mid to up scale place, we would love that!)
Thanks!
Natalie

I'm new here so I hate to jump in, but if you don't want Kajitsu, possibly Pure Food and Wine? It's upscale, and definitely not relaxing. It's vegan, and the food is very good, IMHO. There's also Candle 79?
As far as Indian, unfortunately, none of the more upscale Indian restaurants that I know of are vegetarian. I love Saravanaas, but it's not much for ambiance...

re: vegivore
Do you know of any upscale indian restaurants at all? They would probably have veg/vegan options. I want to please the rest of the girls that aren't necessarily vegan! Bhojan seems to have a fun ambiance, that's the type I'm looking for!

re: Natt
I loved Tabla, but they recently closed. Devi would have been perfect. But the chef left, and I've heard the food has gone downhill.
There's also Tamarind, Amma, Nivarna, and Dawat. Unfortunately, the only one I've actually been to is Tamarind, and I, personally, found the food a little bit under spiced. But that could just be me. Also, Tulsi recently opened with the former chef from Devi, and is supposed to be very good.
I'm pretty sure they all have vegetarian choices. But I'm not at all sure about vegan, so, depending on how strict your friend is, I would check to make sure. Indian food is generally cooked in ghee...

I really like Bhojan on Lexington for vegetarian (and kosher) Indian food in a classy setting.
