Mexican In Kennett Sq

  • 4

So LaBan gives thumbs up to Taq Moroleon but says you can get better chimichangas at La Pena near Kennett Square. Where the heck is La Pena??? BTW, tried Tapatia which took over the space vacated by Moroleon. The space looked kind of drab, mostly because it was virtually empty on a weeknight. Service ok. Then came he food! Excellent, I thought. Grilled skirt steak was moist and tender. Grilled chicken served on a sizzle plate was the same. Worth a second visit for sure. They deserve more customers.

  1. I didn't even know there was a new restaurant in Taqueria's old location. That's such a dead strip mall, I never have any reason to be there.

I wondered about La Pena too after reading LaBan's review. The only thing I can think of is a place on Cypress on the left that's brightly colored on the outside -- maybe the colors of the Mexican flag. If that IS the place, I stopped in once to try their tacos, and I was put off by what looked like food that had been sitting out for hours, waiting to be dished out. It was counter service only as I recall, and it does NOT strike me as the kind of place LaBan would ever venture into.

    BTW, is Tapatia BYO?

It is BYO. We were using a coupon for a second entree free so I thought it would really be nickle and diming them to bring our own drinks. We stayed with soft drinks but for sure next time I'll leave the coupon at home and bring along a couple of cold ones. I failed to mention that even with the small number of customers there were five people working the kitchen. Hope the quality level stays up there.

So we tried Tapatia (?) last week. I think it's every bit as good as Taqueria Moroleon -- maybe even better. It kind of reminds me of what Taqueria M. was like in its early days. I don't feel I need to travel into Avondale for authentic, inexpensive Mexican food any more. AND, Tapatia is BYO -- a plus in my book!

      2. CindyJ is correct. It is on Cypress with all the bright colors. The food is very good. Taqueria's new location is on 41 heading towards Delaware. It sits right on the border. It used to be an Italian place, La something, which also had pretty good food.
