SENGELMANN HALL IN SCHULENBURG TX
My Wife and I have a good friend in Schulenburg, so we visit her frequently. The Sengalmann Hall is a beautiful old saloon dance hall from ages ago. We have been there once about a year or so ago. It was a sunday when a polka band was to play.....the place was packed and we had to be served in the bar area. The food was worth the wait and the service was adequate for the amount of people there that day. HOWEVER....Yesterday we went back to Sengelmann Hall. We had been looking forward to attending the Polka Dance for at least two months and were eager to experience the dining adventure of the Schulenburg Area. We drove from the Bastrop area to be there as the "Brunch" was to begin at 11 am. We met our dear friend and showed up 11:30 or so. The Staff appeared to be surprised it seems that anyone was coming into the restaurant. We informed the Hostess that we wanted the Brunch and then seated ourselves. I have never in my life seen such an atrocious excuse for a meal displayed in the "warming" trays. The guy from the kitchen was lighting the sterno heaters after he placed the entrees. Everything was cold, except for a glob of oatmeal in the soup warmer. The Soup was luke warm and hopefully just a day or so old. Then a gal came in from someplace and started ordering folks about to change it up as everything was inedible. This was about 45 min after we sat down. We kept asking when or if anything was available. My wife started to become ill due to the cold food still sitting in front of her. I witnessed the same guy bring hot mashed potatoes to the warming trays where upon placing them in .....the water from below oozed into the pan he was serving. I threw up a bit in my mouth. The same gal that had "taken charge" when she entered, came to see what was the matter. We informed her that the the brunch was advertised to begin at 11 it was well after 12:30 and still the food was not acceptable for consumption. She was told that were intending to dance at the polka upstairs but that we have to go find something to eat before we collapsed. It was the Worst I have ever been treated in a restaurant in my entire life. Something has definitely gone wrong. I most likely will not be going back...at least to eat.

After reading TXMAN's post, I had to reply. My husband and I went to Sengelmann Hall on Sunday, too for polka and brunch and we had a wonderful, piping hot breakfast. He had the buffet and I had chicken and mushroom crepes. I talked to a female manager who explained the wind coming from the front doors had blown out the burners on the buffet and when she realized it, she ran to the kitchen and ordered them to bring out hot food immediately to the buffet. My husband had several helpings of the German Ribs and Sauerkraut and couldn't have been happier. I'm sorry, but I can't agree that the restaurant isn't worthy of eating there! We have always had good food at Sengelmann Hall. and you even said that your food was "worth the wait" on Saturday??? Things do happen and I think the managers did an excellent job remedying the situation, especially when they realized the burners had blown out from the wind. They closed the doors and brought out new food! the polka dance was so much fun! We love the Shiner Hobo Band and can't wait to visit Sengelmann's again! We felt it was important to let folks know that our Sunday brunch was fantastic and the service was excellent!
