You have a lot to choose from. My favorite is Dish Osteria on 17th street. It's a little hard to find, but worth the search! Another good choice is the 17th Street Cafe. Both have great food, not formal but very nice.

Rick.. Those are great choices (I've too more place than I thought ) .. cambodican kitchen I will look into..
Burghfeeder... Dish sounds great !! I will be looking into 17th Street

The biggest draw to me for the SSide is the variety and options , only place (please let me k
nwo if Im wrong ) that has soo many places within walking distance.

A year or so ago I ate at City Grill and had really good meal.. I went in for a drink on sat around 630-7 and it was DEAD .... Did i just luck out and get a good meal once or did it go down hill?

I think I end up agreeing with Burghfeeder on every thread, and I'm not going to deviate from that trend now. My absolute favorite on the South Side is Dish Osteria.

I can also second Rick's suggestion of Thai Me Up, as well as the 17th Street Cafe, which used to be a regular for me. And I've heard good things about Cambod-Ican but have yet to go.

Another few I like are Yo Rita, which offers some unique and tasty tacos. Mike and Tony's has some pretty good, not great, gyros. And it doesn't seem to get a ton of love 'round these parts, but I've been to Tusca a few times for tapas and generally come away satisfied.

If I'm looking for a really good sandwich and some quality suds, which is often, I often end up heading over to Fat Head's, and they rarely disappoint.

Fat Head's is ALWAYS my GO TO place to recomend for people visiting Pittsburgh
(granted most of my friends visting are beer geeks and do not want to fork over $60a meal )
No matter what city I am people will mention Fats Heads,,, way more than pirmantis

I think most tapas places in this area get it hard ...

Though I've never been myself, if I were going to the SS, I'd want to eat at Yo Rita. Someone here convinced me it's a great place. Now I just have to get myself across the river.

Food was so so. Dirty place. Wait staff smelled really bad. Our waiter came back later covered with cologne awful again. Food tasted like cologne. Can go on but that is the jist. This was two visits in about 2 months of each other. Will never go back.

I'm really surprised by your poor experience, Effort.

I generally get to Mallorca every two to three months, and, while I think the place is slightly overrated as far as the Pittsburgh food scene is considered, I've never had a bad time. It is one of the few places in Pittsburgh that offers true Spanish cuisine, and, in my opinion, certainly the best.

Mallorca is not an airy, bright, open space, but I have never thought it dirty. It is a smaller, quaint, kind of darkened space, very nicely appointed. And I've never had foul-smelling servers there, but I can certainly see where that would really detract from the food and experience.

My suggestion, Augie, would be to give it a try or two and see what you think. Effort did this and was not impressed, but it's good that he tried. My friends and I, on the other hand, have usually been impressed by our experiences there, and we've never had a bad experience, really. The food itself is generally good, sometimes exquisite and rarely underwhelming.

I have to agree. I think Mallorca is really dirty and very overrated. They have had the same 10 specials for the past 10 years and frankly the food really isn't the same as what I experienced when in Spain. Grilled meat and fish with spanish rice does not make it authentic spanish food. That being said the portions are tremendous, the steaks, lamb and pork are of good quality and they do offer a lot of poultry choices, chicken, game hen and quail.

The South Side is full of great choices. Dish has been recommended by others and is probably the best restaurant in the neighborhood but there are other great choices depending on what you are looking for. In my opinion, skip Fat Head's Saloon for food. It used to be a lot better but has seemingly slipped in the past few years though it is still an excellent place to drink some beers. For bar food I truly think it is tough to beat Piper's Pub or the Birmingham Bridge Tavern. Both are clean with great fresh food, courteous staff, etc. Looking for a little more upscale I would think Caffe Davio and 17th Street Cafe would fit the bill. Both have a very South Side feel but whip out some delicious food. Caffe Davio is BYOB but they also serve a fantastic breakfast. If you want ethnic food Yo Rita has been mentioned and is a great place to lay down a base before bar crawling your way up Carson, but I also love Kassab's Lebanese restaurant. It's cheap, BYOB, but absolutely delicious.

Good luck searching out and trying some new places.

I'll second the recommendation for Piper's. I ate there on a visit to Pittsburgh a few months ago, and was very pleased. I recommend one of their starters -- the fries that some with a vindloo dipping sauce. Awesome stuff.

Pipers has just about the biggest fish sandwich I've ever seen...It's good too! While you are there make sure to try a Scotch Egg, which is hardboiled, wrapped in sausage, breaded and deep fried. Not quite health food, but excellent!

Burgh I went Pipers for a drink and wanted to get the Scotch Eggs soo bad.. Its so refreshing (to me at least) when the bar tenders are into what they serve.. 2nd time there and will be back to eat for sure.. especially after hearing it on here

I first found Pipers after leaving Fatheads because of the long wait. Haven't been back to Fatheads since. Food is much better and the beer is not that far behind.

I third the Piper's. I love their fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and curry...not to mention the great beer. I like Ibiza for tapas, Kassab's is great for Middle Eastern..Dish for something really special.

I think the issue with Fat Heads is the constant crowds... kitchen rushes and doesnt get it just as good.. remember when I was 21 a couple years ago.. never a watied (or at least too long) Last weekend (sat) from 3 till 10 no chance of even getting in

Yo Rita definitely, ditto for Dish and Cafe Du Jour. Always like Blue Grotto for a slice. Cafe Davio? Ate there only once. Portions were huge, and some of it was good (not great). Personally it's not a place I would recommend, because it's nothing I can't make at home or, for the price, get better food somewhere else.

Visiting the Burg for a few days this past weekend we decided to give Dish on the south side a try. Being from this city and knowing the lay of the land I never have very high expectations for a restaurant there especially an Italian one at that. This said, I was blown away as Dish is simply that good and for sure one of Pittsburgh's very best.

Overall food, service and ambiance amazing for a little joint nestled on 17th street in the heart of the south side. The parking truly sucks but that is to be expected in this part of town. The food including pasta, steak, apps and desert all best in class. This little gem would do very well and flourish if plucked out of Pittsburgh and dropped on to Manhattan island.

Woohoo - we now finally have a restaurant to look forward to when visiting my home town.
