Chicago trip report

Just finishing a long, delicious weekend in Chicago. Notes on places visited:

The Girl and the Goat. No reservations, no problem after a 30 minute wait on a Thursday night. Lively, stylish crowd jammed the long, wide tables. Excellent server (Marnie) knew the menu very well and was superb with the interesting, diverse wine list. Our favorites were, by far, the sugo and the pig face with egg. The octopus looked good but was bland as were the green beans.

Terzo Piano for lunch. Beautiful spare and open space atop the Modern wing at the Art Institute. Dressy older crowd, mostly women, of museum supporters. Lamb burger with fries was wonderful. Spinach salad with diced chicken was wonderful to look at but near tasteless. Excellent cocktails and well edited wine list.

Long man and Eagle. In the now hot Logan Square neighborhood, outstanding cocktails at this crowded local haunt. Crowd is hip with more tatoos than Jimmy Choos. Appetizers were fun (duck rilettes, meat balls) while the cocktails were as great as advertised. Entrees were just ok, eg, the pot au feu was boring and barely warm.

Fred's at Barneys for lunch. Must stop for lunch while in the Oak St shopping area. Great Salad Nicoise at the bar featuring just lightly seared sushi grade tuna and the delicious extra anchovies (white bocarones from Spain) I requested. Fun break.

Spiaggia. At the bar without reservation was an easy seat. Best in show were and incredible gnocchi
and the venison cooked three ways. Risotto with sweetbreads were disappointing (very little rice and a bit dry) as was the pork entree, also dry. Wine list was killer good but the markups were off the chart. Our good Sardinian red was $175. Too expensive to return.. 2 apps and 2 entrees plus the wine mentioned got us out of there for $450. I'll stick to the Cafe next time.

Purple Pig for lunch. Killer $22 menu for restaurant week featured olives, tuna poached in olive oil, and pork shoulder. To a single order of that special we added pork rilette and squash appetizer. Delicious, fun and great value.

Diet begins tomorrow. Thank you Chicago for a wonderful long weekend.
