Maximal Flavor for Minimal Cash

Sam Sifton recently had a piece in the times with the title "Maximal Flavor for Minimal Cash" in which he offered some advice to a visitor to the city on how to get maximum bang for the buck.

I was wondering what the chowhound community might contribute to such a discussion

Chinese, or cheap eats in Chinatown. There ar many ways to enjoy a meal for 5 bucks or less. Dumplings, soup bowls, rice plates, street vendors and coffee shops for dim sum come to mind. There are also cafeterias where you can get 4 items with rice and tea for 4 bucks.
