like the title says, am looking for suggestions for a nice b-day meal in little saigon area.
a few that come to mind, brodard, quan hy/hop, favori, s, xanh bistro, newport seafood, thien an, and ummm...? my mind runs a blank.... so suggestions?

thanks in advance!

p.s. food allergies include shellfish, so if the place is only recommendable for lobster or crab or the like, probably not gonna work...

Well, if you want a nice sit-down with pleasant, attentive service you'll probably want to stay with the upper echelon of restaurants, pricewise. Xanh or S would be my choice; I don't care for Brodard Chateau, because it's an expensive, jarring version of the regular Brodard. Quan Hy would be a good choice as well, but be aware that most things have shrimp in them.

What about Binh Dan for seven courses of goat, or Nhu Y for eight courses of fish? Or, depending how large your party is, Dat Thanh for broken rice and Brodard-style nem nuong cuon? You could go to Luc Dinh Ky, too.

      thanks for the suggestions!

do you happen to know how nhu y compares with other fish restaurants? i'm reading through the yelp reviews but its pretty daunting weeding through all the poorly written reviews.

i'll probably pass on luc dinh ky. the last couple of times haven't been as good as before. although it depends on what you like. they still get a large crowd and have business...

I think Xanh is a good choice for a b-day party. I love all the places you mentioned, but I think Xanh is better set up. Not as crowded, has parking etc. I've actually been there a few times where they have groups dining. Plus, they would probably be easier to accommodate the no shellfish request. Since it is a b-day, this is the one place in Little Saigon with pretty good desserts (unless you go to Pierre Bakery!)

Brodard, is great for the spring rolls, but can be a zoo on the weekends.

i guess you've had luck. with the exception of the last time, xanh bistro has been uncomfortably crowded when i've gone.

          Well, good for them!

All the places listed above are usually crowded. In my experience Xanh and Quan Hop are less crowded. I still think Xanh would be a better place for a birthday party. Plus, they would probably get the 'no shellfish' rule.
