Upscale & Suitable for Vegans?

My partner and I are both vegan and are looking for somewhere to have an upscale meal. Our price limit is $300 and only one of us drinks. The most upscale vegan restaurant we know is Fressen and it's very underwhelming.

I feel strange going to somewhere non-vegetarian and asking to accommodate both of us, even in advance. Does anyone know of a place that isn't completely vegetarian but it wouldn't be awkward to ask for both meals to be vegan? We're thinking Woodlot, but are open to suggestions.

  1. I think if you called Splendido, George or Colborne Lane and asked if the chef would be willing to do a vegan tasting menu, you'd be pleasantly surprised at how accommodating they'd be. I find as long as you give enough advanced notice, most chefs are willing to do just about anything. It would also help if you are willing to dine on a weeknight when they are less busy.

I second those recommendations, and especially colborne lane because their modern techniques can produce textures that aren't usual in vegan food. I was only a vegan for a very short time, but I remember being somewhat bored by the lack of variety and would have welcomed varied textures such as those on offer at colborne lane.

Another option is Live and Breathe. The chef, Howard Dubrovsky, is a vegetarian, also plays with "molecular gastronomy" techniques, and has competed in Vegan Iron Chef. I have no doubt that he would accommodate you and your partner. The room is nice, too.

I think Woodlot is a good choice, but will be underwhelming if you're looking for a special night out. I personally can't stand Fressen.

Agree with L.A.B. - my first choice too. NOT exclusively a vegan restaurant, but they are very knowledgeable.

    2. George did a great vegan tasting menu for a group of us last year.
