Best Jerky on the Way to Mammoth
I don't agree. Mahogany is good, but not what I like - it's too thick.
There's a good jerky place in Olancha, across from the Mobile, before you hit Crystal Geyser plant, on your right (if heading TO mammoth). But the best, in my mind, is the local made stuff that you find in the Chevron Station when you enter Lone Pine. It's made by some local person and is amazing (sorry don't know name, but ask the guy at the counter).

This picture was taken just this past weekend.
Mahogany also has some the of the best sandwiches I've ever had. This time around I got the Hog Heaven: Ham, cappicola, bacon, cheese, grilled onion and peppers on toasted baguette. Picture attached to induce drooling.
God, I wish this place wasn't 4 hours away... want to bring me back some jerky and a few sandwiches? :)
re: LA Buckeye Fan
Yeah, Mahogany is the way to go, and it's not even close. I don't know if there are still signs further south around Olancha saying "World's Best Jerky" and stuff like that, but avoid all of that if it still applies (it's shipped in from out-of-state anyway).
Schat's Bakery should also be a mandatory pit stop when going through Bishop. Get some cheese bread if nothing else, but you would have a tough time getting only one item there after walking around.
Wasn't this place called Country Store or Country something(?). It's in the town of Bishop on the right hand side going northbound on 395. We always stopped and buy a pound of their cowboy jerky on our way up to Mammoth. It's pricey but so good. They also used to sell mahagony chips for smoking but I think they've stopped selling it. Their mahagony smoked bacon is to die for.
