West Indies Soul is closing (sound: wailing and moaning)

Because of the Job From Hell (TM), I don't get over to the Midtown Global Market very often. (Read almost never.) So I haven't been funneling my dining dollars to the places I love at the MidGloMo. Tragically, the result is that my beloved West Indies Soul is closing on Feb. 25th. No more walk-up jerk chicken, curried goat, stewed red snapper, spicy beef pasties, or those amazing, addictive greens.

I am completely and utterly bummed. And I'm planning to call in sick next week so I can eat there once more before they close. If you, like me, appreciate West Indies Soul's food, I recommend that you hie yourself thither - very soon - for one last meal.

HeavyTable has one small crumb of brightness amidst the gloom: Sharon Noel will continue to be available for catering. I wonder if I can convince my office to have a Caribbean lunch?

  1. That's too bad. We dined at MGM last night, and the place was very light.

    1. My husband is going to be devastated. I wonder if they'll still have the booth at the State Fair?

The HeavyTable blurb mentioned that she hopes to have a State Fair booth this year. So I've got my fingers crossed!

      2. This is very sad news. I've been a patron of West Indies Soul since their early days on University in St. Paul.

Can anyone point me to another source for Jamaican Patties? There used to be a little Carribean market on East Lake that sold them frozen, but they closed a few years ago. Mail order is so very expensive. Help!

i am also very sad to see them close. this economy is killing the little establishments left and right :(

Dragon Star Oriental Foods has them in the freezer section (it's on Dale and Minnehaha in St. Paul).

Thank you sarahcooks and soupkitten! Life just wouldn't be the same without Jamaican patties.

Went to Dragon Star tonight not a patty to be found in the freezer:-( Help now I have a major patty crave:-)

            2. What I was told was that business wasn't good enough to justify keeping it because it was interfering with the catering. They will remain at the state fair.

              1. I was at the global market today West Indies oul was open Laurie at the local cheese, meat etc stand said they are there for another month or so

Hooray! I never made it there in Feb, so it's good to know I have another chance. Curried goat, here I come!

Awesome! We are going tonight so I decided to check this thread. My initial dejection due to the Feb 25th date was 180'ed by the news that West Indies Soul is still open. Hello roti
