Simply Pasta

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help.

We will be in Manhattan for a long weekend and wanted one night's meal to be at a nice Italian restaurant where we could get fresh pasta, red sauces, chicken parmesan, and dishes with meatballs and suasage...traditional pasta, if you will, as opposed to the restaurants that
serve pasta dishes that have so many additions to them that the pasta itself is almost an
afterthought.

I promise I have read the Manhattan and The Best boards, but thought I'd try this specific
question for any recommendations anyone might have.

  1. my two favorite Italian dishes at the moment are:

    1. Crispo - "Trofie al Prosciutto" Peas, Truffle Butter & Parmigiano". I rank it in my top five favorite plates. Other items from their menu that shouldn't be missed are the Mozzarella and Risotto Balls and the Stuffed Cherry Peppers with Proscciutto and Provolone, each priced at $6.50. It's important to request a table in the covered garden, preferably near the fireplace. it's a very cozy space, so much that we spent Christmas Eve and Valentine's Day there. Love it!

    2. Frankies 17 - Sweet Sausage, Roasted Red Peppers & Onions Over Creamy Polenta. A simple dish done well.

Neither restaurant serves Chicken Parm, but both have fantastic fresh pastas, red sauce, sausage and meatballs.

    1. Have you looked into Rubirosa? We just had the chicken parm there and it was delicious (and we took half of it home). The pastas are also exceptional, as are the thin crust pizzas.

      1. It's important to differentiate between Italian and Italian-American cuisines. What you are describing is Italian-American. For that, you'd be better off heading to Brooklyn (it's not as far as you might think); check the Outer Boroughs board for recs. If that is not possible, then Rubirosa or Frankie's 17 fit your request. Also Patsy's near Times Square, not to be confused with the Patsy's pizza chain with locations around Manhattan.
