5 Guys, yuk. They have a sign in all their stores that they only cook burgers WELL DONE. Translation= shoe leather.

They cook the meat well done because of lawsuits and consistency. I have only been to the ones in DC and they were great, I have heard that the franchises since they have blown up are not as good so I will have to wait and see. I would not say they were like shoe leather (Mcd's, BK and the rest of chain-land pplaces all cook their burgers well done) and I like my burgers medium rare typically but like a good whopper they were stll tasty. the fries were also great. Based on my limited experiences it was not as good as In & Out Burger.

Lawsuits? You mean when I get my heavenly burger very RARE at Le Jardin du Roi I can sue them? I think it's more a reflection of the quality of the meat and the handling of the meat. (sucks)

As far as McD's that's hardly even meat. One burger can have meat from over 100 different steer. It's the next worst thing to poison.. There a re lots of poisons that taste good. They say antifreeze is delicious...

E coli law suits most likely but also reagrding kids health meat should be fully cooked "they say".

I have seen people order well done meat at the fanciest of places where the food is as locally sourced and organic as possible so it's really about preference and taste I suppose.

My point is that there are some places/burgers that just come well done and one wouldn't get to order it any other way then the way it comes: ala the chain shops mentioned previously & white castle or even pat's hubba hubba as other examples.

5Gs is all press, as in media and grilling. They are overcooked, greasy not very flavorful pieces of beef that require tons of "free" toppings to make them edible. And I have eaten them at several locations.

the grease is what they are all about *g*. seriously for a fast food burger they are very good (even if fast has now been removed from the equation). and yesall the toppings are needed . but remember now almost 50 yrs. from when mcd ran rampant at least burgers have made a come back as an aside i remember a new yorker cartoon fat cat in a limo ~to driver~ it was a stroke of genius them eliminating the burger all together (looking at a ff place , bun n run _over 500 types of buns

yup, there are people who really like them and i applaud their marketing and wish them success. bu it is just not my cup of tea. and i once waited close to 30 minutes after ordering for a 5G grease-scapade.

You are much too kind about the shoe leather. Shoe leather is dry, these hockey pucks are loaded with grease. They are actually cremated to the classification very, very well done and carbonized. They appear to be deep fried, but I am not sure of that.

Their french fries are excellent and served in copious amounts.

the sign says "well done and juicy." they use beef with a high fat content. you can call it greasy all you want, but it is far from shoe leather.

when i get burgers from five guys, i usually just get cheese on them and they are pretty damn good. nothing compared to a restaurant like the lazyboy or anything...but of all the fast food chains i would say five guys has the best quality. seriously, it's JUST fast food, what else can you expect? if you want a 5 star burger, go to the wall street burger shoppe or something.

            2. jfood Feb 17, 2011 04:07 PM

Manage your expectations. The burgers are all overcooked and very greasy. The toppings are free and many and this is what gives the burger the flavor. The lines will be out the door when they first open and just wait for things to calm down, go around 2:00 right before school lets out and decide for yourself. With all the great choices at mom and pops and bars 5Gs is just a high end McD's. Quality control on the fries is non-existent and you can receive them half cooked or perfectly cooked. I could not care less which part of Idaho or Montana they come from. Either they are good or not. And for me they were not.

Agree with the quality control on the fries...the 2 in our area (East Central FL) consistently turn out lousy fries.

Agreed, there are plenty of pubs on Mamaroneck Avenue where you can get a better - and not overcooked - burger. The 5G fries I've had were excellent, though.

I like a great rare burger in a good pub or restaurant, but to compare a fast food place to this type of restaurant style burger is like comparing apples to apes. You have to compare it on a fair playing field, mcd's, burger king, and imho 5 guys is a better burger in comparison to those. I can't even compare to my favorite because a white castle is it's own animal... it's not the same as any fast food burger so I can't even go their to put it into this game. Hope this makes sense and get my point across enough.

I'm not sure you can compare 5Gs to McDonald's and Burger King, either. I mean, their burgers are cooked on a griddle, they're not premade or sitting under heat lamps. I think the best comparison might to be a place like In-N-Out or Shake Shack. Haven't had a burger from Shake Shack yet, but having been out to CA, I think the burgers at In-N-Out are better than 5G.

I've had shake shack, and although I hated my overall experience and would not go back, it was a better tasting burger then 5 guys.

Just had a 5G from exit 59 in New Haven. It was Frickin DELISH! No doubt about it. 8 napkins for me alone, a large fries (with 3 of us still had leftovers). I had a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup & fried onions. Others had plain bacon cheese burger and plain cheese burger and all agreed that well don or not it was anything but shoe-leather! Yes had to wait 10 minutes or so but who cares as it's "slow fast food" I agree with kdgchow. You can't fairly compare all the different places to get a burger. I would put this 5G up against Shake Shack & In & Out and would be happy to do the blind tasting. I love them all. The argument about the toppings is ridiculous. Ya put on it what you like period. Even with just the cheese or bacon they were juicy as hell. Greasy? Not really but then again we weren't there for spa-food!

I went to the Nanuet location yesterday with the kids, the double burger was pretty dry and not nearly greasy enough for me. I think the person was pressing to hard on the grill, This location has been pretty good on past visits. I'm sure I'll be back to give it another try.

For a FAR superior burger, head down to Smashburger in the Riverside Sq Mall. Med rare, juicy, tasty, and a much higher quality of meat. Much nicer ambience as well. 5 Guys, meh.

tried smashburger when out west and it was decent. more of a "commercial" appeal in regards to the marketing and look of the place. I would not say it was better then any of the above mentioned places though and far from superior to anything really. obviously peoples tastes are different though so this can go on for ever. 5G I find pretty damn good as is white castle, in and out, etc. some people hate them...oh well less of a wait hopefully when I get the craving.

I find Smashburger to be about 100x better than 5G. More comfortable, faster service, will cook medium rare, better condiments, nicer ambience, and a much juicier, more flavorful burger. No contest. Different league. Prices are about the same, BTW.

Danks, I think they should just open carts and kiosks all over the tri-state area & in airports just serving the plain burger. nothing else. Perfectly steamed with the tiny diced onions...maybe .75 cents a pop including tax. Imagine that as you are getting on at your gate or on the train. I would buy a sack of 20 in a heartbeat. i would also weigh 300 pounds but boy would I be happy...
