Hi there .. I will be proposing to my girlfriend in the next 2 - 4 weeks. I am looking for restaurant rec's to help make this a very special evening. Without sounding like I'm cheaping out .. it doesnt necessarily have to be the most expensive place. The cost of everything is certainly adding up. That being said however .. money is not exactly a huge issue either. Style of food isnt either. What Im looking for is obviously a romantic setting, with excellent food. I was thinking along the lines of West? Bishops has been done by my sister so thats out!! Any idea ??
Thanks for any help !!!
Joel

All the suggestions above are great and would certainly help make it an even more memorable night. I'd like to offer a slightly different tack. What about someplace like the Salmon House in West Vancouver. The view is fantastic (assuming you get a clear night) and it would feel like you have the whole city at your feet. Can't vouch for the food though, haven't been up there in many a year. What about up on Grouse? Someone there taught Anthony Sedlak how to cook. Anyone know what it is like now?

was at West a couple days ago, had the seasonal tasting menu (all seafood) and it was hit and miss. First 2 courses great, next 2 good but underwhelming, dessert very good. But then, I had been at Bluewater a couple days earlier so had a high bar to compare it to for seafood.

The prix fixe menu at Lumiere? I think if you told them of your special occasion, they would make it memorable. Service is fantastic...

I've always thought the private table for two at Il Giardino that is sort of up in the wine racks is really romantic. Not sure the details of how to book it though.

          That's a great suggestion jenzed.
West is a fine choice - my spouse and I have celebrated a few anniversaries there - though haven't been since Chef Gunawan took the helm.

          Best wishes!

While I won't venture to recommend a specific place (although my own preference would be for small, romantic and French), I will venture to suggest that you contact the restaurant ahead of time and let them know that it is a very special occasion and you plan to propose. See if they will do a special prix fixe menu for you with paired wines (within your budget, of course). Then, when you arrive, you will be whisked in and everything will be taken care of. Very romantic.

            Warmest congratulations!

Without discussing the food, the courtyard at Brix has a pretty great atmosphere to it. I liked it enough to get married there.
