Melisse, Valentino, Cafe La Boheme, Gordon Ramsay, Cicada or something else?

Hi all, I'm looking for a fine dining restaurant for a special occasion and heard these places are pretty good. Its going to be just me and my girlfriend dining. Price really isnt a concern and I'd like something where dressing up is preferred.
We're not very picky on the type of cuisine, French, Italian, Asian, American etc are all good to me.
Which of these restaurants have the best atmosphere/food? Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

    Valentino
    Providence
    Melisse

    In that order of preference.

I find Valentino's atmosphere to be really dated. Maybe they remodeled since I went a few years back?

      Definitely Melisse or Providence.

When Valentino hits its notes, it may arguably be the best restaurant in Southern CA.

in terms of his pasta notes, he now has some formidable competition from a less formal restaurant, also located in santa monica: hosteria piccolo (sp?) locate at 606 broadway.

the pappardelle hosteria piccolo was serving during restaurant week easily was as good as ANY pasta i've had at valentino"s.

There are also no doubt certain dishes at Scarpetta that would be as good, if not better, than anything Valentino puts out.

But, on the whole, I think Valentino is in a class by itself (when it is on, that is).
