Modern Dining Rm - recommendations wanted

  • 1

nice NYC dining weekend coming up. Ai Fiori on Fri, The Modern Dining Rm on Sat. Will be seafod all the way through on Fri @ Ai Fiori...looking for any recomendations not to miss at The Modern, going for more of a warm/winter type meal with some nice red wine. If I were there right now, the 4 course would be;

Oven Roasted Trumpet Royale Mushrooms...
Sepia Risotto...
Modern Pot Eu Feu...
Manjari Chocolate Palet...

Anything you would recommend be changed??? Some of those 2nd course options look good, the potatoe gateau, alaskan king crab, etc. Tough choices!

  1. We went the other night. What a nice restaurant!

    Dinner started with some canapes. Porcini popcorn, some sort of potato and cheese tart, salmon tartare, and a cherry licorice madeline.

    Amuse was roasted monkfish...really quite nice.

    Wife and I both had the scallop and tuna tartare. Excellent! Probably the best in the city (sorry Gotham!).

    Next, wife had the king crab. Two small sticks of crab with the mushroom and grapefruit together on the other side of the plate.

    I had the sepia. It was simply the best risotto i have had. Smoky, with perfectly cooked pieces of cuttlefish. Paired with a barbera from santa barbara, this was my favorite dish of the evening.

    For the main, wife had the lobster (good not great in my opinion...wife loved it). I had the pot au feu, which was good, but not as good as the lamb I had last time I was there. Beef was good, beef cheek was the best part of this..Maybe splurge the extra 10 bucks and go for the venison.

    No more pre-dessert?. Maybe because it was a Thursday night?

    I had the chocolate palette for dessert. It was great. Wife had the "mango thing" which was I didnt even taste.

    Chocolate truck was great...Got a bunch of stuff and then got seconds. Go for the cappuccino cream. It was a very nice treat.

    We did wine pairings with the dinner, and the selections, while value laden, really didn't wow us at all...We said, be creative, but unlike places like daniel/eleven madison park, they didn't stray from the wine list at all.
