rosetattoo76 Feb 12, 2011 08:17 AM

Looking to have an evening with an old friend...oysters, bubbly, some other nibbles. Can be Mission, SOMA, FidI...really anywhere BARTable. Not looking for 33$ a dozen. Any suggestions?

I don't think I've seen quality oysters under $2 each. For example Salt House (which fits your description well enough) has half their menu at 2.5, half at 3 (and has a chalkboard for oysters of the day). Paragon only has one kind, unnamed, $24 on the dozen. Zuni is $2.5 mostly, some 3.25. Harris Ranch (styling interior, even for a minichain) is $15, but unknown quantity of oysters - likely 6.

What price are you looking for?

$2 or around there is fine...I didn't even think of Salt House or Zuni!
Anyone tried Hogs n Rocks in the Mission yet?

Their oysters were the only things i liked, actually, so that's a good spot for you. I've had great oysters at Luka's on their Monday dollar oyster nights, but that's in Oakland.... Someone recently mentioned a place south of Market that has a happy hour oyster special.... sorry, can't remember it.....

ETA, duh, plain as the nose on my face - right below me is Windy's post about Zuppa.

There's a thread on here evaluating the many happy hour oyster options.

For cozy, my two choices would be B bar, above Yerba Buena, for $1 each or Zuppa, which has its full menu of pizzas, salads etc. Oysters are 75 cents each and you're limited to a dozen (each, I think). You can sit outside at B if the weather's nice; they have truffle fries and good cocktails too.

Hog Island is certainly fresh, but unless you can sit outside, the atmosphere isn't great for catching up. And once they switch to regular pricing, you can end up with a pretty bill.

Get there before happy hour ends, put in your orders, and then switch to the regular menus after.

When I hear a sentence, around valentine's day, that involves "old friend" "oysters and champagne", I think a little more than "catching up". Yet, Salt House and Zuni's bar are a little noisy --- but do consider them. Jardinere is quite a bit nicer (civic center bart), but above your price point ($3.5 each) - no obvious happy hour. Ditto Absinthe ($3.5 from the raw bar, 6 kinds - a nice half-bottle bubbly list but nothing cheap). Foreign Cinema is bart-able and has a large raw bar, but the prices are in the mid-thirtys for a dozen except for one or two types --- and do you want to signal to your old friend they can only eat off the cheap end of the menu?

OP said nothing about whether happy hour is an option.... clearly it's the path to cheap oysters, though!

Hog and Rocks got an early moderately positive mention, I haven't seen anything detailed or been there myself

Hog Island does serve wine by the glass and undoubtedly champagne. I suspect they're in the 2.5 / 3 range for standard oysters, too. You can also do the pick nick thing - grab a dozen "togo" and bring your own bubbly, sit out by the big arrow sculpture. With the weather in the last few weeks, I wouldn't recommend, but if you get lucky and hit an 80 degree SF day, that's the ticket.

Yes, you heard Valentine's day. I read "not looking for 33$ a dozen."

What are the prices at Anchor Oyster Bar and is there champagne, sparkling wine, on their list?

For an old friend catch up over oysters and drinks, best to shift to late afternoon and capture some of the deals.

Waterbar has $1 oysters every day until 6. If you get there early enough you could put in an order and then sip your cocktails for a while. They also have a strong list of oysters in general in the 2.50 - 3.25 range.

Second the rec for B on happy hour $1 oysters as well. A couple weeks back on one visit they had two on offer at the HH price. Preston Points (I think) and Miyagi. We tried to do 6 and 6. They ended up giving us 4 extra of the Preston Points because they were small. Best service on $1 oysters I've ever seen.

I find Hogs and Rocks to be a just fine place for a girlfriend catch up, but it is a bit more sceney at times than purely relaxing.

thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Nope - this really is two old friends catching up, nothing Valentines about it!
We're settling for Hogs n Rocks - we'll be in the Mission and we're both curious. Although I wish I had thought of Zuppa before though -- next time!
