Chinatown Butchers- In particular: PORK BELLY

Hi All,

I live in Williamsburg and all the pork belly i have seen at butchers around me (a la Meat Hook) is 8.00 + a pound, which seems crazy for the cut. I'm looking to buy it to prepare in a Chinese style so figure why not find a butcher in Chinatown where it is surely cheaper!? That's where I need your help please.. do you know of any good butchers in Chinatown or where I could get pork belly there?

I know where i can get prepared pork belly but not any reputable meat vendors.. please help!

$8.00/lb isn't crazy if it's high quality stuff, a la Niman Ranch and whatnot. But for run-of-the-mill you can go cheaper, certainly. I'll second (third, fourth, whatever) Deluxe Food Market. Also note that if you're regularly in Midtown / Herald Square area, the Korean market Han Ah Reum has decent quality at decent prices. Used to buy it there all the time when I lived across the street.

I would agree with any Chinese butcher for the cut. Another possibility....recently, I purchased a 7 pound portion of Pig Belly with spare ribs attached for 1.79/lb at Shop Rite Supermarket. on sale. When not on sale price, it's usually 3.49/lb. The on duty butcher was able to accommodate my request for a piece from the center, full slab. I thought it was a great deal. There is a Shop Rite store in Brooklyn (shoprite.com).

My Chinatown spots have already been named, but you should also check out Florence Meat Market on Jones Street in the West Village. They don't have anything precut; they cut it right when you ask. I bought a pork belly from them for New Years and it was both inexpensive and tasty.

i get it from bayard meat market, im not sure what AubWah means about a "dangerous atmosphere" as I find bayard meat market as much cleaner as less hectic than deluxe food market (although deluxe is a cool place), in fact i think the place is very clean

Deluxe is best, although sometimes if it's too chaotic, I'll go across the street to Hong Kong.

ummm that seems to be a very unfounded fear, since when have you heard of anything like that happening? ctown is far from being even a remotely dangerous neighborhood
