Looking for Awesome BBQ for my Wedding

Hi there,
We're renting a house for our wedding in Norfolk, CT and are hoping to have a big bbq bash for our friends and family. Can any fellow chowhounders recommend some BBQ joints in CT or MA that cater? So far I've come across Bub's BBQ, Cookhouse Restaurant and Blue Ribbon BBQ. Does anyone have any thoughts on these?
All ideas much appreciated!

  1. wow, you are in the wrong part of the world to get quality bbq. That said, I suggest you search some of the BBQ fanatic sites for suggestions. When you look, you might focus on your bbq taste preferences: beef brisket? chopped or sliced pork, eastern [pepper/vinegar sauce] or tomato base sauce? ribs, dry rubbed or wet? Good luck!

Of course, you could just honeymoon in the hill country of Texas . . .

    1. Check out He reviews most of the BBQ joints in New England.
Check out New England BBQ & Catering; 120 Jackson St. Canton, MA
Check out Purple Turtle Catering in Norwalk CT.

You can't go wrong with either one.

      1. I used Tar River BBQ out of Colchester, CT to do a party for about 80 people when my son returned from Afghanistan. The food was delicious. Two friends from the south were here for the party and they thought it was very good.

        1. I've eaten at Bub's and Blue Ribbon. BT's Smokehouse in Sturbridge is the best Q I've had in the last year. Pretty sure they cater.

            Skip Bub's.

BT's is supposed to be excellent, I haven't made the trip yet but have heard enthusiastic reports from trusted sources.

Holy Smokes - - formerly out of Shelburne Falls, MA and currently out of Turner's Falls, MA does some excellent smoked que, and they are great people too, I can definitely recommend them highly. The have a portable kitchen and have done catering in the past, not sure if they still do but definitely worth a call.

I'm not sure what level of formality you are going for, but you might want to consider just hiring a caterer to provide staff and extras (salads, cake, etc) and then have them serve good barbecue - the best barbecue guys don't need to travel to make a good living, and you might find it easier to source a big pre-order than to find someone who will set up at your party.

            Good luck, and congrats!

Redbones of Somerville, MA catered my sister's wedding in the Lakes Region of NH. It was great. If they'd travel to NH, I'm sure they'd travel to CT.

Redbones is not the best BBQ. I've never had their catering, and I could see it being decent as they put out a good spread of options for sides, more than a lot of BBQ places. But their meats, the heart of any BBQ operation, are nothing more than just decent in my opinion.
