Vietnamese food in SG Valley

Beyond pho and the ubiquitously mentioned Golden Deli, can the local hounds recommend other Vietnamese restaurants in the SG Valley? I loved the variety in Westminster when we used to live in OC, especially the French-Vietnamese places and the 7 courses of beef or fish. Thanks.

  1. Well, here are some Vietnamese choices (other than Pho or Golden Deli):

    Phong Dinh Restaurant
    3119 N. San Gabriel Blvd.
    Rosemead
    626-573-8623
*Go the for the exotic meat dishes like alligator (luc lac)

    Nem Nuong Ninh Hoa
    9016 Mission Dr.
    Rosemead
    626.286.3370
*Get the char-broiled pork paste (nem nuong)

Just had the charbroiled pork meatball from Nem Nuong Ninh Hoa. Tasted great. However, we're suffering an MSG headache from the rest of the food.

Is Brodard II in Alhambra still in business? I really liked the original Brodard in OC.

Yes but name changed to Nha Trang. The address is the same.

        647 Valley
        Alhambra, ca

Senator, I served with Brodard II, I knew Brodard II, Brodard II was a friend of mine. Senator, Nha Trang is no Brodard II.

          1. re: Josh

Thanks for the clarification. The menu looks the same so I thought it's the same owner.

      2. re: ipse dixit

You can't miss with the banh cuon at Tay Ho, in the Goldworld Plaza on Valley - the most delicate conceivable rice noodle crepes, wrapped around pate and other yummies.

The broken rice and various accompaniments at Than Kieu, various locations, is extremely delicious.

And of course there are the sandwiches at Lee's and Mr. Baguette, to name just a few.

      3. Lee Kam Kee Vietnamese Rstrnt
        626) 282-7720
        2505 W Valley Blvd
        Alhambra, CA 91803

Pretty good... and clean, too. My fiance loves their curry w/ baguette.

        1. re: pinkshch

I happen to like Lee Kam Kee a lot. They have several crab dishes, we usually order the one cooked with beer. We also like the papaya salad, spicy tofu (not really spicy), and the cubed filet mignon French style.

        2. Catty-cornered across the street from Golden Deli is Vietnam House, owned and run by the same people, where one may find the 7-course beef thing at an extremely reasonable price. We did that one night - I wouldn't want it often, 'cause it is a bit much of a muchness, but everything was nicely prepared and several of the dishes I could happily adopt as regular favorites. The rest of the menu is very much like Golden Deli's, with the added advantage of being usually a lot less crowded.

          1. re: Will Owen

And Vietnam House serves beer. And perhaps most importantly, accepts credit cards.

Vietnam House is closed on Tuesdays; Golden Deli closes on Wednesdays, so always beware of that. I learned the hard way.

          2. Second that for Vietnam House and the seven courses of beef, especially Rounds One, Six, and Seven.

            1. Where is Vietnam House? I love Seven Courses, especially if its a good price.

              1. re: Disturbed_Azn

Anh Hong in Rosemead is excellent - in my opinion, better than Vietnam House. I have been going for years and the quality has remained pleasantly consistent. Prices are about the same. I usually go with my g/f and order the 7 course special for one, and then add a plate of beef and shrimp marinated in lemongrass for tableside grilling.

8748 VALLEY BLVD STE A ROSEMEAD, CA 91770

                1. re: nougat

Unfortunately, I have to disagree on the Anh Hong suggestion. The place is a mess - from the floor, to the table and the wall - all covered in dropped food/grease. Cleanliness of a food establishment can certainly add to its overall enjoyment. Thus, the lack of it is a huge turn off.

              2. I like Bahn Mi & Che Cali, and I think they have a branch in Rosemead. I never been to that one (I've only been to the one in westminster), but when I googled it, I found this blog.

                I hope this helps.

                1. re: dee

The one in Rosemead is good -- open, airy, clean, plenty of places to sit.

My Hanh on Garvey east of Rosemead (9611 E. Garvey?) has excellent, excellent bun.

My Dung is good-tasting but it smells terrible and is dirty. (Good G-d Almighty, what a terrible sentence out of context!)

                  1. re: dee

Is it me, or are the sandwiches at the Rosemead Bahn Mi Che Cali bland? They were tasty when they first opened, but they are starting to make sandwiches with vegetables that are barely pickled and meats that are way too fatty and not as flavorful as it use to be.

                    1. re: misseatalot

yes! but i feel the same about all the banh mi places i frequent. Quality is just not what it used to be. =(

                  2. Here are a few short reviews:

                    http://www.geocities.com/raytamsgv/vi...

                    1. i personally like the pho at pho79 on main/garfield and the egg rolls at noodle city on valley/6th. what do you guys/gals think about these places?

                      1. IMO, the best Viet Bread, or Bahn Mi is located in Alhambra. May Toa? I think thats the name, its on vally after Atlantic I believe, in the same shopping center as Gamestructure.

May Toa also sells Com Tam Thut Nuong and others for only $3.00 - $3.50, great price and tastes just like a restraunt. However, be warned they close at 7pm and they tend to give less meat at night.
