Date night-cocktails and dinner suggestion please!

We'll be in town with our daughter in March {for Spring Break}. We're going to have one night for ourselves and I need help planning it. Usually I pick a fine dining type place and that's our "special" night. But this trip I'd like to do cocktails some place then dinner at a more casual, though still great place close by.

We're early and late 30's, no certain budget or area of town needed, we're not huge fans of Asian cuisines. Seafood and Italian are favorites. Have loved Marea, Balthazar and Babbo on past trips. We're planning on Marea, Balthazar, Keens, FishTag and Maialino, Grand Central OB for lunchs/dinners during the rest of the week. Still filling in the rest of the holes.

I'm leaning towards Minetta Tavern {went there for brunch last trip and loved it} but I know a decent timed dinner reservation is hard to get. Any bar suggestions close to there if I can get a decent reservation? The only places I've been that I'm not in a huge rush to go back is the Bar Room at the Modern. Just didn't love it.

If you end up at Minetta Tavern, the bartenders there are excellent and you could do fine with the list. You could also get cocktails at the bar at Perilla, or Fatty Johnson's (which actually has a great burger), Little Branch (note they open at 7pm), Employees Only, or Pegu Club.

Even if you don't get into Minetta Tavern, there are tons of options in the vicinity that you could do for a more casual meal especially if you don't mind waiting: Perilla, Pearl Oyster Bar, Blue Ribbon Bakery, Lupa, Po, Keste, Joseph Leonard, Jeffrey's Luncheonette, etc.

Cocktails near Balthazar: 1534 and Peels. Pegu Club and Lani Kai are a little further away. The Mulberry Project is kind of close as well, I've not been.

Cocktails near Keens: Empire Room, cellar bar at the Andaz Hotel, or the lobby of the Ace Hotel (though it tends to get quite crowded).

Cocktails near FishTag: I would go to Fatty Crab.

Cocktails near Grand Central Oyster Bar: Campbell Apartment is right there. Bar 44 at the Royalton and the Andaz' bar I mentioned above are a short walk away.

Cocktails near Maialino: this is a tougher neighborhood. You could try to get into the Rose Bar in the Gramercy Park Hotel. The cocktails at Maialino are pretty good. You could also go to the bar area inside of Eleven Madison Park.

I agree that the bartenders are great at MT, I just like the idea of going some place beforehand. Maybe we'll trying Pegu Club. Thanks for all the other suggestions for bars close to the other restaurants. I'll file them away for when we don't have a 6 year old with us! Which will be in July actually!
