Going to The Beehive
We're catching up with some dear friends this weekend at a dinner at The Beehive. It was chosen because of the combo of jazz and food, and hubby thought its chef, who appeared on Chopped, was funny.
I'm sure there are much better places to dine, nonetheless this is the choice. Has anyone been lately or can advise on what dishes are hits and misses?

My family was there for brunch this weekend. No Techno music, but we did sit far from the jazz (no reservation). We thought the food was pretty good. I had the hanger steak, and it was a hit big time with all of us, including picky 9 & 13 year old girls. My wife loved her eggs benedict, but older daughter ordered the french toast, which was a disappointment.
All in all good time, although not perfect.

While I didn't feel like I got stung at The BeeHive, it wasn't a honeypot either. For one thing, they play techno music between jazz sets. Excruciatingly loud techno music. Not what I was expecting, nor did I enjoy it. So thumbs down on ambiance.
Someone from the restaurant called the day of our reservation and informed me there would be a strict 90-minute limit to our table, then we could continue in the bar. Our appetizers and entrees lasted the full 90 minutes (no fault of the restaurant, we're just slow.), so we had to leave before we could consider dessert and coffee. Honestly, it was just as well.
During the same confirmation call I was asked for my credit card number to hold the table and was told if we didn't show up I would be charged $10 a person. Just lovely. Put me in a great mood (note sarcasm there).
The food was mostly ok but nothing I would be compelled to rush back for. The Flatbread Pizza and Ribeye Steak Frites were good. Pierogi filling was good but the skins were tough, Moroccan Cigars weren't my favorite spice but they were ok. Rice Balls were a bit dull, and while a special Rack of Lamb was cooked very nicely medium rare, the accompanying gnocchi were as hard as marbles but less flavorful. How could a professional chef make such bad gnocchi?
Anyway, the evening was fine as we have friends who are pretty easygoing and we had a good time with them...even moreso when we left The Beehive and went somewhere else to finish the night off.

Trish, we had a similar experience to yours this weekend. The mezze platter was quite good, with all sorts of delicious spreads. My husband had the ribeye and absolutely loved it. But I had a special that night, grouper, and it really wasn't good. The fish was cooked right, but it was spice encrusted, and it was so hot it burned my mouth (and I'm not particularly sensitive to spice). By contrast, the rice that accompanied it was completely bland. As you said, how could a professional chef make boring rice? I will say that desserts were excellent. We had a delicious cherry cheesecake that was dense but not like eating a block of cream cheese, and the chocolate pot de creme was to die for. Also, we did have a reservation and got to sit near the stage, and they did call to confirm but didn't ask for a credit card. We were only four; maybe the credit card is only for larger parties.

I too went there for the same reasons as you. First, call and ask to reserve a table somewhere close to the stage. Otherwise, like us, you will be totally unaware that there is live music being played somewhere in the building especially if you plan on eating during prime time dinner service. The place can get incredibly crowded and noisy. At least at our table, the seats were terribly uncomfortable but they do force you to practice good posture. The food was all pretty good. Our favorite was the Moroccan Cigars as an app. We have been back for brunch and loved it - much more mellow. Remember - if you want to hear/see the music, table closer to the stage. It can be a pretty fun time.

Agreed: that's the last thing I had there I really liked. Avoid the poutine at all costs.

I love The Beehive. I ordered simple: Plates and sandwiches rather than entrees. Shared everything. It's really fun.
