Harriet's Cheesecakes---Sweet Potato Pie Cheesecake---WOWSA!
This write-up may trigger a "no duh" response from Angelenos. Seems like I am late to jump on the Harriet's bandwagon.
After reading many accolades on-line AND seeing a feature on "Best Thing I Ever Ate" I decided to drive down to Inglewood to treat myself to a slice of Harriet's cheesecake.
I entered the barebone facility, consisting of one counter and a whiteboard with today's flavors posted (and then erased when sold out). About 2 dozen options were available, but I had made up my mind long in advance: sweet potato pie cheesecake!
A very friendly young man asked if he could help me, and I placed my order. He went to the kitchen to prepare my slice. In the meantime, a woman in her 40's or 50's (could this be Harriet?) came out and asked if I had already been helped. Very friendly folks.
It did take about 8 minutes for my slice to be prepared....but who cares? This cheesecake was well worth the wait. I loved the firm gingerbread crust....it was a little spicy and gave the pie a kick! There was a layer of sweet potato pie and a layer of cheesecake, topped off with a thin layer of sour cream and a generous portion of candies pecans. WOW!
The cheesecake was nice and cold....this is important to me. Room-temperature cheesecake is far less appealing to me.
I appreciate that there is still a cheesecake maker who favors quality over quantity. The slice was moderate in size....but perfectly satisfying. Well worth the $6.50. I will be returning not only to pick up whole pies for special events, but to try the banana cream pie cheesecake that the other customers were cooing over.
My favorite cheesecake in L.A.....worth the drive to Inglewood.
