fun lunch spot - midtown west

Hi all - I have friends coming into town next week. I am working in midtown west currently (new position) and can't really leave the neighborhood to meet them for lunch. does anyone have any suggestions for spots in the area (I'm at 51st and 6th). I'm pregnant so Sushi is out....but we are open to anything else. Somewhere nice, sit down, price doesn't matter so much, but has to be good to get them to come to midtown

    You might want to try Ma Peche (56 St. between 5th & 6th). Food is excellent, and I think it is "fun". They have the great Milk Bar for take away desserts. My new favorite is the pretzel cake truffle.

        I'm not sure that I would classify Alto as "fun." Also, with the departure of Michael White, I'm wondering about the status of the food -- not that he was exactly on the premises before the split since he was busy opening other restaurants. Could be Chris Cannon is taking more of a hands-on approach though he isn't, afaik, doing any cooking there.

        Good call on Oceana. I should have though of it. And it's the closest -- only two block away. We've been there for lunch as well as for several dinners. Delicious food, excellent service, and very attractive decor.

          For excellent Mexican (not Tex-Mex), I highly recommend Toloache, on 50th, b/t B'way & 8th. Very good service and pleasing atmospherics.

          Another wonderful option is The Bar Room at The Modern, on 53rd, b/t 5th & 6th. Delicious Alsatian-inspired French cuisine. Great vibe.

            I second the Bar Room at the Modern. I have yet to try a bad dish there.
