TN: 2008 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Sainte-Catherine Clos des Capucins
As long as I'm in a Weinbach state of mind, wanted to share this from the other night:
Intensely aromatic, with notes of beeswax, dusty pear, clove and Meyer lemon. Gives way to an almost bacony meatiness after time in the glass.
Good mouth weight, shot through with bracing acidity and a touch of minerality to complement lingering apricot. Has the voluptuous, mouthwatering “chewiness” I associate with Alsatian Pinot Gris. Rich and elegant. Curious to see what another couple of years will do.
Paired with butternut squash risotto – squash roasted with cumin, coriander, cayenne – sprinkled with toasted pumpkin seeds. Had to tweak with a little brown sugar and lemon at the end to bring the spiciness level back to something that wouldn’t overwhelm the wine.
Thinking this wine would be a spectacular match with Moroccan tagines or rabbit stewed with apricots and prunes...
