Need a Mexican restaurant in the valley near CSUN

Grog Feb 7, 2011 11:16 AM

The place (full service) should have well made food (fresh ingredients and traditional), be clean and comfortable for 6 adults and offer, at a minimum, beer & wine. It should be near CSUN at the north end of the valley to the 101 Fwy. Nothing west of Tampa or east of Balboa.

I have a recommendation for Salsa and Beer which is in the right area. Any comments on this one?

All other recs are appreciated.

-TIA-

I've heard good things about Salsa and Beer, though I've never been personally.

Salsa & Beer is down the street from me and it is very good. Great salsa bar with about 8 different kinds to choose from. It does get very crowded at lunch and dinnertime on weekends, so there can be a bit of a wait, unless you arrive earlier.

Las Calaveras on Roscoe Blvd/Tampa Ave. It is on Roscoe, just past Tampa. It is in the strip mall past the Del Taco. They make everything fresh and the tortillas are handmade, as well. I don't know if they serve beer/wine, though. But the food is exceptional!

They told me they make their guac multiple times per day so it doesn't get brown and icky, and you can really taste that. Their beans are not the usual refried beans, but beans slightly mashed and cooked with chorizo. I recently had the Carnitas on a huarache and could not get over how fresh and flavorful each ingredient was. They make the huarache there and then lightly fry it so it gets a little puffy. Incredibly tasty!

I -HIGHLY- recommend and second Las Calaveras in Northridge... the food blows Salsa and Beer away (no easy feat) and definitely surpasses Las Fuentes in a heartbeat. Their food is absolutely incredible.... check 'em out before they get packed to the gills (like good ole Salsa y Beer).
