best dim sum items at oriental garden?

I'm meeting my sons in New York and going out for brunch this Sunday. We love dim sum. Have read numerous threads on this board about where to go. Settled on Oriental Garden simply because of those dim sum places given decent reports, OG opens the earliest (9 a.m.). We have to start early so my son can catch his bus back to his college (so alternative restaurant suggestions aren't helpful unless they're for places that open just as early). We're adventurous eaters and will order whatever OG does well. Recommendations?

You realize that Oriental Garden has cart service, right? Are you on the lookout for additional non-cart items to order? Since you'll be dining at 9am, I think you'll be more at the mercy of whatever happens to be on the carts at the time.

Here's hoping you come back and tell us what you thought about these items and any others you had.

OG allows you to order specific dim sum items, even if they are not on the current rotation on the carts. For example, if you ask for turnip cake, they will fix an order, bring out your portion and then take a platter around to the other tables.

The shu mai and har gau are not particularly special, but the shark fin dumpling and the bean curd with pork, both of which are usually on the steam cart, are great. The turnip cake is also typically very good. The Shanghai dumpling, which comes with a great vinegar sauce, are a great item that are not on the carts.

When I've done that they have waved me off with "it's coming," but maybe it's just me.

It's been over a year since I have been to OG, but my recollection is they have a menu on the table with pictures of the Dim Sum available for order......never once encountered a problem unless you consider an item was not available...Also, I do not remember any cart service per se, but rather a server carrying a tray around the room.

OG doesn't seem to get a lot of love on this board, but I am a fan myself.

The Giant Oyster with black bean sauce is really special.
Snow Pea Leave Shu Mai are fantastic at OG.
The 1/2 Peking Duck w/ Buns are great too.
Crispy seaweed/shrimp roll is standard but great.
They are known for seafood more than anything, would highly recommend Razor Clams with XO Sauce and/or country style lobster.
        Enjoy

I have to say that these items all sound very much like our kind of thing. Will try to eat as many of them as possible on Saturday. So thank you. And to the other respondents, too.
