La Maree, Mamaroneck
Want to take a trip over to this place, but before I do I wanted to know if they hand slice the salmon right in front of you at the shop, or is everything pre-packaged and the same as buying the package in Fairway or another market? Do they have any herring or salads at the shop?

They do not hand slice it for you. It is all packaged. Good, but packaged. I went there last year before my Yom Kippur break fast expecting it to be sliced right there, and I was disappointed.

Honestly, if you happened to be in the area, maybe out of curiosity. But to make a trip, no. I live 7 minutes away and I'd sooner go into the city. Not sure exactly where you are but on a Saturday or Sunday morning, Zabar's is an easy trip. To me, that would be worth the time.
I haven't bought it in a long time (a very long time), but when I lived on West 70th Street and got too lazy to go anywhere else, I actually think that Fairway had nice smoked salmon that was freshly sliced for you. There were a few varieties...can't remember which one I used to buy (maybe Western?).

Ok, thanks. Actually I was asking about the rec for Mt Kisco Smokehouse, and if they hand slice in front of you, unlike Homarus.
Re: Fairway-- they are not very adept at hand slicing salmon, in my view. They actually cut it horizontally, instead of the pro forma angle slice. And all of their hand sliced salmon comes from Acme, of medium quality. The Portier/La Maree package is actually better than the Fairway hand sliced!

@menton1: They do hand slice at Mt Kisco Smokehouse. They also hand slice at Turcos in Yorktown but the quality, although passable, is not as good. I rarely go to the Smokehouse without also getting some herring and a few other things. Don't care for their bagels which are from the bakery in Bedford Hills. So as usual, it's a series of stops.
