Pomona Bistro & Wine Bar in Sarasota

Last evening we tried “Pomona” a new restaurant opened on Pineapple Square by 2 of the 3 partners of the now-closed Zoria. The space is quietly elegant and I would describe the cuisine as upscale French bistro. It was packed last night and it’s clearly been discovered. Our group was 5 and, since Pomona has a small size option on most everything, we were able to sample 18 dishes (including 3 shared desserts). We were completely happy and the crowd around us also seemed to be having a grand time. There was a group of 8 next to our table in black tie and gowns for no other reason than to have fun. It’s that kind of place. (Nicely casual was the dress for everyone else). Highly recommended (and reluctantly so, since it’s a fairly small space and I would hate to be unable to get in should they get even more popular.) ;-)

    1. I will be visiting Sarasota in a couple weeks. Does anyone have an update on Pomona? Is it still as good as this review?

Thanks! Any other recommendations? Anything new in the past year?

You might want to try Louie's Modern. It's a really cool looking place, with a good vibe. I'd go for drinks and apps. Main course was just ok.

WE love Louie"s Modern as well as the new restaurant at the Ritz....Both are exceptional happening new places in Sarasota.

Irwin, what are your thoughts about Ophelia? I'll be there for the first time tomorrow.

Ate there a few months back and thought it was excellent. Actually I said to the waitress--do you have a new owner or chef...
She said not for a few years, but we want to go back. The view is breathtaking and am sure you will enjoy the evening.
I also noticed that the restaurant is spotless....
Very important in my book !!

The ahi tuna appetizer and hog snapper entrée were my choices from the web site menu, but neither was on the menu of the day. I had the escargot appetizer in pastry, scallop entrée with the awesome scalloped potatoes, copious wines, crème brulee, perfect weather for the outdoor seating with a nice display of heat lightning a safe distance away. Overall a very pleasant experience. Pricey.
