Hmmm... so if a Ch-er had been there, it wouldn't qualify for the show?? ?? I don't understand. It's been open since 1965!

    2. I went there about 10 years ago, my grandparents live in New Castle and this place is located right next to one of my favorite greasy spoon guilty pleasures, The Dog House. Rascal's is everything they mentioned, smelly, gross and producing a poor product. I will admit though, I am intriuged to see if they have changed.

I don't think bluehens meant that if a CH ate there that it would be good, just that it seemed like no-one wanted to eat there in that condition and that's why it would qualify.

During the show, they had 150 covers the first night, and 170 the next night. That's over 300 people right there!

There are rumors going around that the place is slowly returning to pre-show condition, and others say that it is closed...

        Looking for facts!

Call them? Why??? Would they give an objective response as to the dining experience there? What's wrong with asking Chowhounders?

            1. re: menton1

Just trying to give you a simple solution to your "others say that it is closed" rumor. As for a dining experience, hopefully someone will share a recent experience.

      2. Reported in the News Journal a couple weeks ago:

This show sounds like a clone of Gordon Ramsey's show. It's reality TV so you have to take everything with a grain of salt. Drama and entertainment first, reality a distant second. They had over 300 people because they brought them in. They didn't just all show up because all of the sudden it was a good place to eat. I've been going to the Dog House for 25 years and never saw more than a car or two parked across the street and it never occurred to me to go there. I don't know anyone, I mean anyone who has ever eaten there.

Me either. And it always seemed odd for a place around here to feature crabs from Louisiana seeing that the Chesepeake is just down the road.

        2. Is it true that this place closed?

Driven past here the past few nights including about 30 minutes ago and there were zero cars and only the reflection of a neon light.

Crabs in New Castle. Need I say more.

What about Lestardo's in New Castle?

                1. re: menton1

Exactly, one step lateral from Rascal's.

                  1. re: Mr. Fister

Not a crab person, but they are open and provide good customer service at a decent price. That's at least two things that Rascal's isn't.

                2. re: Mr. Fister

You might well say more. Is this good or bad?

            2. The biggest problem with Rascals is that its been open and closed several times over the years so no one whats going on. I really don't were they 300 in New Castle DE to go there in 2 weeks let alone 2 nights. They renovated several times. The place used to be pretty busy when it was open regularly but something happened. Maybe the owner got tired. But this building on one of the busiest highways in the state going to waste is a shame.
I worked at the Doghouse for a week during the summer and its jam packed from open to clse. Rascals could be the same way.

Rascal's has reopened for the "season". Not crowded, so don't know how they will do moving into th summer.

              2. Rascal's is gone. Owner put on a new coat of paint and new sign, "Beach Bum BBQ & Crabs"

                      No information on that site...

How is this new place? Is it a new owner or the same guy?

                      1. re: menton1

I was just there Sept 12,2011 for takeout. Shocked to see, no Rascals, but Beach Bums. Same owner, new name. Apparently, TV show, put the lid on the coffin of the place. I used to go there, loved it and was very disappointed on Monday. New hours, opens 4:30pm and the owner showed up and unlocked the door at 4:29 carrying in rolls of paper towels and aluminum trays. No waitress help, the one nice gentlemen helping was doing everything, restaurant side, take out side, cashier side etc. Owner cooking. Didn't have big crabs, but what they had was good, the brisket tasted good, but way dry and served in a very unappealing way. Remember this was takeout but so what? I feel bad, because I loved that place. If the owner can shake off his depression, put the work ethic and enthusiasm back into the place, show up early and go above and beyond for each customer, he will win everyone back. That is my prayer.

Sorry to say shelly, but this place is doomed! If the owner can't get there until one minute before they open, what does that tell you about the place. This guy should just get out of the restaurant biz.

                          1. re: genevapics

Wouldn't it take at least an hour to get the cooking equipment going and prep the food?

                            1. re: menton1

You're both correct. That's probably why he went on FN Rest. Impossible to begin with. If he can't put (at this point) 1000% effort into winning customers back and do everything required plus a whole bunch more, then he should pack it in and move to another line of work,

Update: It seems this location is closed and available for purchase.
