Recs for Kid friendly near Union Station?

  • 3

Was hoping for thoughts about a Friday dinner near Union Station that would be friendly enough for a 2.5 yr old. I know everyone says this, but she is used to going out and well-behaved, but we are looking for something casual and where we won't feel too out of place with her. It does need to be near the station, convention center or Hyatt as we have to check in for a conference pretty soon after dinner.

In the search for Union Station, Jaleo and Toscana Cafe were all mentioned. Thoughts about taking a 2.5 yr old to one of them?

  1. I've never been to Toscana Cafe but Jaleo would work for a 2 1/2 year old. It's loud enough that if this well-behaved child decides to be a little noisy no one would notice. That said...I don't really think it's Union Station area. It's closer to Gallery Place/Chinatonw.

If you are willing to expand around the Capitol area you can head over to Eastern Market and I think Matchbox, Cava, or Ted's Bulletin.

Art and Soul might be open to kids that age, but I haven't been in awhile and haven't seen kids there so maybe someone else can answer.

    1. Look at Art and Soul that Elyssa recommended. It's classy, but you don't need to be dressed up. It is closer to the Hyatt on New Jersey Ave than Jaleo.

If you're heading over to the convention center after dinner, then you can eat in the Gallery Plce area -- between the Hyatt and the convention center. Personally, I would prefer some of the Gallery Place joints because I find Art and Soul to be a step more expensive. Jaleo and Matchbox are spectacular. Matchbox has great food, very adult restaurant, but I once ate with two toddlers in their pajamas. The waitstaff couldn't have been nicer.

Another Gallery Place idea: Kanlaya Thai.

      1. Toscana Cafe is definitely kid-friendly (and great, IMO). I've actually never eaten there in the winter, but I've had dinner frequently on the patio in the summer and I definitely recall seeing kids there. Living nearby, I walk by on a frequent basis and see families eating on the patio all of the time during the warmer months.
