fresh, SLICED bread?

this one is a bit embarassing to ask. I do not have a proper bread knife (it's on my wish list!), and feel absolutely awful about trying to slice a loaf of fresh bread using my "all-purpose" kitchen knife. I am so afraid of slicing a finger off, and the cuts are never toaster-appropriate. so...

is it appropriate to ask a local bakery to slice your bread (be it sourdough or brioche) for you? I live nearest to La Farine in Noble Square and love getting a fresh loaf from them for dinner/brunch the afternoon/morning before the meal.

thanks!

Most bakeries will ask you if you want the bread sliced or not. You will not look foolish or declasse.-

Bread knives are pretty cheap compared to fancy kitchen knives. No need to spend a lot of money on one. They're not more than the cost of a couple of loaves of fancy artisanal bread.

You're also in the direction of Ann's Bakery at Chicago & Leavitt. Ukrainian with Polish undertones. Many delicious breads. A slicing machine. And lovely huge braided sandwich rolls the size of a loaf of bread that sell for thirty cents apiece, oh my goodness.

Yes, absolutely! Virtually every bakery that sells whole loafs also has a slicing machine and is happy to slice the bread on request, at no extra charge.

I second nxtasy - any bakery worth its salt will have a bread slicer
