Lunch downtown with Mom, Cafe Claude or Scala's?

Kristine Feb 4, 2011 11:42 AM

We usually do The Rotunda or Mocca's, but I was thinking of trying something new.

I've heard good things about Scala's but their lunch menu looks limited. I was thinking of Cafe Claude but hear mixed reviews, some of wich note their food can be overly salted. Mom is very cautious about her sodium intake so I'm a little worried this won't work.

Any thoughts? Other suggestions welcome.

Between the two, I'd recommend Scala. The food is good, and the ambiance might be a little nicer for mom

My mother in law found Scala's too loud at dinnertime, though she liked the food. Not sure if lunch would be loud, but it's something to consider if your mother is sensitive.

I can't comment on Scala. I've done lunch at Cafe Claude twice with a friend and his mom, and she loves to go there on their "days in the city"...all the way in from Walnut Creek. I haven't noticed a salt problem, but am sometimes heavy on the salt myself. Have had a nice beet salad (better than the average) on the light side and a heavy but tasty vegetarian lasagna. At lunch, it is a mix of business and other folk on weekdays. A nice cozy vibe inside, and it looks nice outside but haven't ever gotten a rezzie to sit there.

Well we ended up at Cafe Claude, (My mom made the final decision).

Honestly I didn't know what to expect, but we both really enjoyed it. First off the meal started with
the Pan Epi from ACME. This is always a good sign. We both shared the beet salad to start, and it was wonderfully flavored. It was much better than any beet salad have had before, I can't put my finger on what it was but it had some herbal notes that put it over the top. For mains my mother had the Pork with apples and honey and I had the Seared Tuna with a bacon onion and peppercorn sauce. Both were great. I fond her pork dish to be a little one note, but the pork was done perfectly, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. My Tuna was done perfectly also, it was a rich dish, but I was in the mood for rich, after all I was in a French restaurant.

The serivice was prompt and efficient, a bit brash but not overtly so. Prices are reasonable, my Mom's not a cheap date so I usually pay way more for our lunches downtown.

All in all I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

funny thing is, Cafe Claude is now run/owned by Italians, not French. Next time your mom comes to down, take her to Belden Place on a nice day - little european-style alley with 6 or 7 restaurants - italian, french, spanish, seafood. very festive on a sunny day to sit outside. B44, Tiramisu and Plouf are my faves.
