Restaurants near Hyundai plant.

  • 5

We will be touring the Hyundai plant near Montgomery next week and would like suggestions for lunch. I've read reviews on Arrirang, but not sure our guys would like that. They are more into burgers and BBQ. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried DJ's Old Post Office?

  1. See if this helps, although I have to say that burgers and BBQ are not Montgomery's strong points. I'd be interested to hear a report on DJ's, never been.

To my knowledge, there isn't anything worth mentioning that's closer to the plant than the outskirts of Montgomery. Depending on how you're coming through town, the best burger joint is Hamburger King on S. Decatur (downtown but just off 85). It's just a cinder-block building that serves up big greasy burgers w/ square cheese. Nothing fancy but it's good. The Marina is the only other burger place worth mentioning, but it's on the other side of the river and not on the way to anywhere.

I wouldn't get BBQ in Mgm. I can't explain why a city this size in Alabama doesn't have a better BBQ option, but it just doesn't. Sam's on the Atlanta Highway is (or was, I haven't been in years) passable b/c of the smoky, spicy baked beans, but that's about it in town. Smokehouse in Millbrook is pretty good but not worth a detour.

If you're coming up 65, I'd hit Capitol Oyster Bar on the Southern Blvd. Good fried seafood and fresh oysters in humble surroundings. It's an institution around here. Easy to get there off 331 if you take the back way into town from Hyundai.

By the way, Arrirang is the real deal, and on our recent visit almost every patron was a Hyundai exec---could be a good place to make Hyundai contacts if that's the purpose of your visit, but of course the private rooms in the back hurt you there. Maybe the best meal I've had in Montgomery though.

Oh, yeah: I hear the Village Kitchen burger may be the best in the city. I can vouch for the chicken & waffles, which is excellent, but haven't had the burger. Significantly more upscale than H. King or the Marina. Not right by the highway, but not hard to locate.

Lugnut, Thanks for the tips. We will be coming into Montgomery from the Prattville area. I'm very interested in chicken and waffles. I haven't had that before and it sounds yummy. Would the Village Kitchen be out of our way? Thanks for the info on the Capitol Oyster Bar as well. We are all fried shrimp fans. You make Arrirang sound wonderful. Tell us what to order - I might can talk everyone into it.

I was just on line to read more about the Capitol Oyster Bar and see that it closed in October. Also checked out the Village Kitchen. It doesn't look too far out of the way.

COB didn't close in October---my wife had lunch there last month. I'd call ahead. Village Kitchen isn't too far out of the way though, especially if you take the back way (331) into town.

As far as I can tell, everything is good at Arrirang. Highlights were fried pork in a spicy red paste and a great dish with rice, bean sprouts, raw egg, etc. All very tasty.
