Coconut Cream Pie- Los Angeles

Where is the best Coconut cream pie in Los Angeles. Friends Birthday and that is the request.
Even better if it comes from a restaurant that is good- we can have lunch too. Thanks

hate to say it, but The Capital Grille in the Beverly Center has the best coconut cream pie I've ever had. I've had the ones at Urth and simplethings - but not at the Apple Pan, though I do like their apple pie - and CG's is really good, not too sweet, a little caramel-y and with a chewy cookie crust.

Would you include Four n' 20's coconut cream pie among the best?

I've never tried theirs, but the other pies I've had there have been workaday at best. NB: I've only been to the Laurel Canyon Blvd location.

go to apple pan, it's the best, and yet it's still usu. too sweet.

You are right. Four n' 20 is serviceable but certainly not the best. By the way, if you are looking for a best in class pie, let me suggest spending $40, yes $40, and ordering a Brazos bottom Pecan Pie from Goode Company BBQ http://www.goodecompany.com/.

Wow, looks amazing, but $40 for pie would never make it past the finance committee.

It is all in the presentation. You simply tell not ask "senior management" that we are going to make an "investment" in a world class pecan pie for ONLY $31.95 + shipping and that includes a reusable, decorative wooden box.

I second Phillipe's. At $2.69 (IIRC, the price when I last had it several months ago), it's well worth the money.

I really liked the coconut cream pie at Simple Things on 3rd. Unfortunately, they only offer it on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

But 24 hours notice gets you any pie you want, even ones that aren't on the menu!

At the risk of sounding totally pedestrian, Marie Calendars makes an awesome coconut cream pie.

There is nothing wrong with MC coconut cream pie, but in comparison to the cream pies at The Apple Pan it's really quite a pale specimen. If you try them side by side, you'll notice a dramatic difference.

Thanks for the Urth Cafe recs... I tend to avoid the place because of the annoying scene but every time I wind up there I'm really impressed by the food. I'll have to give their coconut cream pie a shot.

Urth makes a coconut pie that is excellent but it's really more like coconut custard.

Apple Pan. Wow. You have to check, they don't have it every day.

Favorite: Urth (I've only had it at the Melrose location, so not sure whether it's the same at others)

                        Second favorite: Pie 'n' Burger

I've been to Apple Pan and Jongewaard's Bake 'n Broil numerous times, and while I've never had the coconut cream pie at either, their other pies are spectacular, and I'm sure the coconut cream would be no exception.
