hate to say it, but The Capital Grille in the Beverly Center has the best coconut cream pie I've ever had. I've had the ones at Urth and simplethings - but not at the Apple Pan, though I do like their apple pie - and CG's is really good, not too sweet, a little caramel-y and with a chewy cookie crust.

re: Peripatetic
You are right. Four n' 20 is serviceable but certainly not the best. By the way, if you are looking for a best in class pie, let me suggest spending $40, yes $40, and ordering a Brazos bottom Pecan Pie from Goode Company BBQ http://www.goodecompany.com/.

Wow, looks amazing, but $40 for pie would never make it past the finance committee.

re: trimtab
There is nothing wrong with MC coconut cream pie, but in comparison to the cream pies at The Apple Pan it's really quite a pale specimen. If you try them side by side, you'll notice a dramatic difference.
Thanks for the Urth Cafe recs... I tend to avoid the place because of the annoying scene but every time I wind up there I'm really impressed by the food. I'll have to give their coconut cream pie a shot.
