There actually is such a thing. Its sold under the name "Fridge Locker". You can also get plastic sandwich bags with printed images of mold on them, which might deter your roommates from eating the contents.

well now, that's not very nice! i assume you've addressed the issue with them and didn't get anywhere...?

i'd advise against doing something as in-your-face as putting a locked container in the fridge - i imagine it would just cause tension among all of you. how about getting a cheap mini-refrigerator for your room and keeping some of your food in there?

What is the average cost of the mini fridge to run it for a year? It will only be used to store some simple stuff like vegetable, dairy and fruits.

i have no idea. it would depend on the model you buy and the type of power setup you have. that's something you need to research yourself online or ask someone who sells them.

I picked up a new compact fridge from Walmart for approximately $140, but you can get cheaper models than I got. The price of the electric bill went up about $10 for the month.

As for offending roommates who are stealing from you, sometimes a dirtbag thief requires a figurative boot swiftly planted into their backside.

IMO, Caroline1 has the right attitude. If they don't respect your property, they don't respect you as an individual.

ghg, I'm chuckling here... You're concerned that locking his/her food might be too "in your face" for the roommates who STEAL his/her food? I say make a pan of fudge loaded with Ex-Lax (do they still make that?) or something loaded with enough Sriracha to burn their thieveing little (or big?) fingers off!

mwok, I bought a mini-fridge that is Energy Star rated, and I didn't notice any increase in my electric bill during the time I used it. As a student, I have to assume you're not basking in the lap of luxury so you might check things like Craig's list for small refrigerators. Are you sharing a house with roommates? Am I assuming too much thinking you're a student? It occurs to me that if you were living in a dorm, you wouldn't be concerned about the electric bill, unltss you're thinking of the future.
