Vegan Grocery
Ok, so i'm ashamed to say, Ophra inspired me to try going vegan...at least Monday to Friday. As much of it hurts me to do it, because i do love the cow, pig and chicken, because popping pills is not a good thing....what grocery store has the best vegan selection? and not only the best, the most affordable.

There is a vegan market on Hester St. which stocks a staggering variety of "meat" and "seafood" and "poultry" (as well as a lot of things that don't need scare quotes). I happened by there over the summer, when they were giving out free samples, and enjoyed much of what I had. So if you are a fan of textured soy protein and wheat gluten (I love the stuff), give it a try.

If you are looking to switch to a plain, old vegan diet you can shop pretty much anywhere that sells vegetables, legumes, pulses and other non-animal based foodstuffs. If you want to get into specialty products like seitan, nut cheeses or vegan baking, there is a health food store on 8th Avenue in the upper 50s that has a lot of items, as does Fairway, Whole Foods and Kalustyan's. A lot of baking supplies can be purchased at a good price online as well.
