3 Cheers for Il Bistro

I'm usually one to be hypercritical, but...

It may not (any longer) be trendy, but I had a flawless birthday dinner tonight at Il Bistro. I had not been there for years, and there wasn't much of a crowd. We didn't put the dog on in terms of lots of dishes ordered, but they nailed EVERYTHING. As in Nadia Comenichi's original perfect score. The service was attentive and accomodating all around, the food outstanding, and the total experience all about the experience, not about extraneous things. The osso bucco was very, very good, and the gnocchi with duck confit browned in butter with herbs and finished with honey was so stunning my wife and I just stared at each other as we tried to out-spear each other.

What a pleasant change from high-expectation, low-result places. They got it backwards. Home run.

I completely agree with you about Il Bistro. It's very underrated (or simply overlooked?) IMO. I had a spectacular dinner there with probably the best service I've ever had, and I've eaten at Canlis, which I consider a gold standard in service. I love the atmosphere as well as the food.

They have a very good happy hour 7 days a week from 5-6:30; specials on wine and small plates in the bar. I think I've tried everything on the happy hour menu and nothing disappoints! My favorites, though, are the sauteed calimari (in a light red sauce), pepperoni pizza (really!), and the goat cheese ravioli.

Glad to hear Il Bistro is still good.
I don't live in the city anymore but we used to eat there several times a year.
If you like steak, try their tenderloin and a side of linguine al burro. :-)
