Shrimp burgers
Will be driving from Charleston to Savannah in early April. Any good local places for the famous, local shrimp burgers?

Forget the shrimp burger that is shrimp ground up into a patty and fried. What an awful technique. That would be like putting chanterelle mushrooms in a blender. This corridor has some of the sweetest, most succulent jumbo shrimp in existence, thanks to the beautiful marshes. Just get a shrimp po-boy piled high with local shrimp if you want it in sandwich form. Like at the Glass Onion in Charleston.
Or barring that, just get yourself a tray of fried jumbo shrimp with fries and a sweet tea from some hole-in-the-wall shack that carries fresh seafood. Two places that immediately spring to mind are:
-Fishnet Seafood on Johns Island just west of Charleston

You guys really need to get to NC for a good shrimp burger - that photo looks disgusting. Sorry - don't have photos from my favorite places here - El's Drive Inn in Morehead City and a couple of others. But the whole concept is different. Large shrimp are individually fried, topped with a little slaw and cocktail sauce - out of this world!

re: Jeanne
Thank you. Any strong recs for shrimp burgers on the Outer Banks? i'll have a bit more time out there and I'm crossing a lot of chow territory on the way to Beaufort.
Or maybe I'll drive back to Morehead City for a shrimp burger dinner after I check-in at the hotel since it's so close to Beaufort.

I called ahead to El's to find out what time it would open the doors on Wednesday. 10:30am, which was perfect to dash over from Beaufort and then taking the shrimp burger on the 12:30pm ferry to Ocracoke.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/5667414247/A good plan, but I was running a little bit late checking out of my hotel and didn't get to El's Drive-In until 10:45a. I mentioned that I'd be taking the shrimp burger for my lunch on the ferry. The gentleman asked which ferry and what time. He let out a low whistle when I said Cedar Island at 12:30p, and said, "Well, you won't arrive none too early." I started to worry that an hour's driving time was too optimistic to get there 30 minutes before departure (when my reservation would cancel). So, he made up my order ahead of the other people waiting for food and sent me off with a wish and a prayer that the draw bridge wouldn't be up.
I arrived at Cedar Island terminal at 11:57a, due in large part to the kind propane truck driver who pulled over and waved me ahead when it was safe to pass. Here's what my large shrimp burger, $5, looked like after an hour's drive.

The bun was damp and the breading on the shrimp had softened. But the fried shrimp were still warm and tasted so sweet. Unlike my aversion to slaw in combination with barbecue, I thought El's slaw, which is not as sweet as so many, was a great compliment to the fried shrimp.-----

I too will direct you to St. Helena Island but the Foolish Frog. I was about to recommend their shrimp burger until I checked their menu and realized that it was a crabcake sandwich that I had instead. It was fantastic though. Still worth a plug on here even if they don't have a shrimp burger.

This will require a detour (but you are still heading the right way, and Beaufort is really nice) but take it, after all, you ARE a chowhound!

re: Tee
Now, now. Let's remain calm and keep our composure. After all, we're talking about shrimp burgers here.
Shrimp Shack is terrible, awful, horrendous, and terribly overrated. I am hardly alone in that assessment. Just do a quick Google search, and you will see dozens of negative reviews.
Without a doubt, redstickboy should go to the Foolish Frog for shrimp burgers. They are excellent !!
Now, as to your silly little red herring, I will say this: Charlotte is to bbq, as Sweden is to tequila. Sometimes a chain is all you've got, hence my suggestion of Jim n Nick's. There are world-class bbq "joints" in North Carolina, but not one of them is in, or near, Charlotte.

All calm and composed here, and no red herring intended. There is nothing wrong with us having different opinions. Please keep in mind that we are not snarky on this board, which is a refreshing change from most forums. I really like the civility of the southeast board. I am glad you are here, keep posting but dont be so touchy!
I will try your suggestion of the Foolish Frog the next time I am in the area and will happily post. Thanks for the suggestion!
