Dinner for Large Group and Small Group Near Copley Marriott
Will be in Boston for a conference in mid-April and need to arrange two dinners - one for a group of 20-30 on Wednesday night and another for group of 8-10 on Friday night. For Wednesday we try to keep total cost (w/tax and tip) at not more than $50 while Friday with smaller group can be more pricey - we don't have cars so the logistics (based on long experience) are that Wednesday with larger group should be very near the hotel while Friday can venture further afield by cab or mass transit - the Wednesday group is not too adventerous whiel the Friday group has a broader range and in paricualr likes new places - prefer to aovid chains and steakhouses
Brasserie Jo might suit for the large group (about 4 blocks from the Marriot up Huntington Avenue). Don't know if they'll seat such a large party, but I do know they have a private dining room with a $45.00 prix fixe option (I think they go from 45 up to 75). That's without tax, tip or booze, however. It's very good French bistro food but not so innovative as to scare conservative eaters. If they take "straight" reservations for a group that size, you can eat for less. For your smaller group, I'd go to Hamersley or Erbaluce. If they are walkers and the weather permits, neither is more than 1/2 - 3/4 mile from the hotel. Each is excellent. If you prefer a more "bar scene" place (thought I love the bar at Erbaluce), I'd go to Eastern Standard Kitchen: good food, great bar.

I recently went to a group dinner for 25 people at Post 390 and they did a great job. Very nice private room, good entree choices and very attentive wait staff.
