Anyone ever eat at the German/Eastern European places in Orlando?

  • 6

You never hear much about them, so I wondered if anyone has ever eaten at them and what they thought.

I'm interested in the following places:

Hollerbach's (in Sanford)
Bauern-Stube
Chef Hans Cafe
Chef Henry's
Polonia

Also, anyone know of any Russian places?

  1. Polonia has delicious food, and I highly recommend them. Terrific stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut, pierogies, and kielbasa.

A friend of mine recently started a local food blog and reviewed another Polish place I haven't had a chance to try yet, Anna's Polish Restaurant:

The only Russian place I know of is International Market and Deli on Mills near Colonial, which is more of a grocery store. However, they do have a good assortment of prepared foods and a few tables to sit and eat.

    1. Hollerbach's Willow Tree a few time -- IMO the food isn't **quite** as good as it used to be (thought the sauerbraten was a bit dry last time and they ran out of the rouladen) but this is still a fun place to go, especially with a group, for some lively German music and a great selection of German beer and wines. Stopped in one chilly night in December and had a glass of some sort of hot spiced wine concoction that certainly warmed me up!

Had lunch at Chef Henry's in Longwood around Christmas -- excellent fare in a small, bistro-like setting. You can tell its a family affair and you're greeted warmly and they make sure you are happy. Had the appetizer selection so I could try different items; so I tried I had the Halusky (potato dumplings with farmers cheese), Bryndzovnik (spicy sausages that do not have a casing), and the pierogis. The first two were incredible but I think the pierogies are better at Polonia. Plan to go back for dinner; we understand the desserts are extra special, hopefully I'll have room next time!

Been to Polonia a few times -- love the sauerkraut pierogies with carmalized onions and a bit of sour cream, the Beef Goulash, the Chicken Cutlet (sounds ho-hum but it's really delicious) and there's an unusual smoked salmon appetizer thats sorta like a potato pancake that's very good. If you go, order the sampler which gives you stuffed cabbage, pierogies and kielbasa.

      1. I liked Chef Hans. It fixed my hangover and tasted awesome. Fun space. That's all I remember though.

        1. Hollerbach's is always good, although I haven't been there in a long time. I really need to go back sometime soon.

Can't go wrong with Polonia either. Their perogi and kielbasa are good, and if they have it, their dessert Poppy Roll is just plain awesome! They are the only place I've found that serve these around here. Picture on my blog:

          1. There is a Russian bakery and deli in Winter Park called Lacomka.

            1. Polonia was delicious. I had the wazanki (egg noodles with cabbage, bacon, and kielbasa), and The Boy had the combination plate with stuffed cabbage, smoked kielbasa, and pierogis. I'm excited to go back, as I've heard their red velvet cake is to dye for. (Sorry, couldn't resist that one). I recently returned to the Orlando area and haven't had the pleasure of going anywhere else just yet, but thanks for starting this thread to check into!
