Specialty Food Stores in Queens??
Hey All-
I live in Astoria and I'm looking for anyplace in Queens that makes their own products like homemade salumi, sausage, cheese, ect? I know of places in other parts of the city but aren't there any in Queens? I've seen a few that make their own mozzerella but thats about it. What else is there? I'd love ot try some locally made products- Italian, Greek, whatever.
Any Ideas?
-Jeff.

Family Mart is near you. It was my go-to grocery when I lived in Astoria. Specializes in Japanese products.
29-15 Broadway, Astoria, NYArtopolis is in a tiny mall and has homemade spanikopita, baked breads, pastries. It has the best finikia in NYC outside of my nana's kitchen. If you haven't tried their honey cookies, you must.
Center Point and Kati sell Thai groceries in Woodside (kaffir lime leaves).
63-19 39th Ave, Woodside, NYLeo's Latticini sells amazing homemade mozzarella
46-02 104th St. Corona, NYNixtamal makes their own tortillas, the best in the city and for sale by the pound.
104-05 47th Ave, Corona, NYPatel Brothers has curry leaf and other harder to find vegetables/spices.
42-92 Main Street, FlushingLanzhou has freshly made, hand pulled chinese noodles
Golden Mall, FlushingHong Kong Supermarket is a wonderful place for a wide variety of Chinese ingredients. Where else can you have a choice of 4-5 different fermented soy beans? Endless choices for seaweed, rice wine, vinegar...

re: jeffthepeanut
I've gotten some great ricotta at Rosario's on 31st Street right near the eastern stairs of the Ditmars Stop. They also sell fresh mozzarella that I love. Sorriso's also has great fresh mozz - I didn't realize they made their own sopressata either. I'll definitely have to try it. Thanks for the tip, abee!

I'm in love with Sorriso's Italian pork store on 30th Avenue and 45th Street. They make their own sopressata, which is delicious, and a lot of other things, I believe including sausage and salumi. They also have great pasta and ravioli and fresh mozzarella.
I'll also plug cassinelli pasta on 23rd Avenue just off of 31st street. Delicious fresh pasta.

If Ridgewood's too much of a trek they've got about 1/5th (maybe less) of their stock at the Sunnyside Meat Market. Same owners. By 1/5th I still mean something like 25 Romanian salamis and cured meat products that are all made in Queens.
Also Astoria's home to Joe's Pork Store which is one of the best if not the best place for Italian sausage in NYC.

Hi jeffthepeanut,
Zounds! There are loads!!
What part of Astoria are you in? Muncan on Broadway by 43rd Street should get you started. There's also another Muncan in Ridgewood on Myrtle Avenue.
And, as long as we're talkin' Ridgewood (it's still Queens after all), let's bring up the Ridgewood Pork Store on Seneca Avenue at Bleecker Street and Morscher's Pork Store on Catalpa Avenue between Woodward and Onderdonk.
Yep, these places all make a lot of their own stuff.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure lots of other Chownhounders have gazillions of other great ideas.
Ciao,
Glendale is hungry...
