Upscale Vegetarian Help

Hi All,

My 5th anniversary is coming up and I am looking for place to take my vegetarian wife out to dinner in the city. Any suggestions on romantic and upscale vegetarian restaurants or non-veg restaurants with vegetarian tasting menus?

Thanks so much for any suggestions.

If money is no concern your choices are wide open. My GF is a vegetarian, I am not, and almost every high end restaurant in NYC has accommodated her. Some restaurants, Per Se, Daniel, and Picholine to name a few, already have a vegetarian menu/vegetarian tasting menu.

HanGawi has a very imaginative vegetarian Korenan menu in a stunning, peaceful space. I'm not a vegetarian, but this has become one of my favorites for a change of pace.

I am a veg for 35 yrs with occasional fish lapses. If I were being taken out for a special dinner I would rather go to a fancy all veg restaurant than to a restaurant that is mainly meat and fish with one or two veg entrees. My experience is that the fine restaurants are much more attentive to the meat and fish meals than the veg ones. Also I love to go somewhere where I can choose from lots of things on the menu.

How about Dirt Candy? The restaurant is very small and I would say quaint rather than romantic. The food was quite good and that's coming from a carnivore.

How about Candle 79? My boyfriend and I went there for our anniversary last year. Definitely nice enough to feel special without feeling stuffy. I loved the seitan picatta. My meat-eating boyfriend could not stop raving about the tofu. And we both went crazy for the house-made ginger ale.

If that doesn't appeal, I can also vouch for Dirt Candy and Hangawi. Both excellent choices.

Oh, and I totally forgot because I was focusing on vegetarian restaurants, but Scarpetta came out with a vegetarian menu in the fall that I really enjoyed. I was also treated very well as a vegetarian at Eleven Madison Park.

I am vegetarian, and I have had great meals at Per Se, Daniel, Eleven Madison, Gramercy Tavern, Scarpetta, Convivio (although their menu is sometimes more friendly than others - have never called about ordering off menu). I'm sure there are others that I am blanking on. I liked Jean Georges, but a bit less so than others at similar price points. I was not impressed with Dirt Candy, but I seem to be in the minority, so maybe I went on an off night. It doesn't have much of a special occasion vibe, either, but you may not need that. Also was not impressed with the vegetarian offering at the Modern when I went. Of the above, Per Se and Daniel were my favorites. Trying the vegetarian pasta tasting at Babbo later this month - that may be another option - and rescheduling a dinner at La Grenouille. They had an entirely separate vegetarian menu. If you guys like souffle, that may be a nice pick! Good luck with your choice!

Cafe Boulud has incredible veggie options and if i remember correctly, they will make you a 5 course (plus extras) veggie tasting menu for 89.
